Maui or Jamaica?

We've narrowed it down to two potential spots for our Honeymoon at the end of September, Maui or Jamaica.  We're very torn!  Please share your thoughts.  Also, fiancee doesnt have passport yet, so don't even know if its enough time to get a passport by end of Spet.?.

Re: Maui or Jamaica?

  • We were torn between Maui or Costa Rica...  We ended up going to Maui for our honeymoon.  We have been there before and that was a reason why we decided to go again.  We knew what to expect and we knew it would be perfect for us to just relax and be with each other.  Didn't have to worry about being super busy every minute of the day doing activities.  We plan to do a trip to Costa Rica for an anniverasary.  I also don't remember how long it took to get a passport back.  Maybe only 2 months or so... best of luck!

  • I would go with Maui. Though we haven't been to that island, we did Hawaii for our HM and absolutely LOVED it. We are currently in the very early planning stages of a Maui trip for a couple years from now. I might be biased because I left part of my heart in Hawaii, but I would pick that over Jamaica. For me, Jamaica is all around cheaper and easier to get to (shorter flights) and a trip you could easily do in the future. But if you have the means to do Hawaii now, I would jump on it.

  • those places are actually very different. I've been to both and Jamaica multiple times. I think it will depend on budget and what type of vacation you want (more relaxing, more sightseeing, etc.) I think you have plenty of time to get a passport as well. You are able to pay for an expedited passport, too!

Ditto the bolded part, if you have the time and the money to go to Hawaii now, then definitely do it! The Caribbean is so much closer and cheaper to get to that it's much easier to go to for future trips, whereas for your HM you should go all out and take the extra time off work and go and get away from it all with your new H after the wedding.

We're going to Jamaica in a few weeks for our anniversary, and we're super excited, but if time and money weren't an issue we'd definitely be going to Hawaii instead ;)
  • For us, it was a matter of all-inclusive or not all-inclusive. And we chose an all-inclusive. :)
  • Actually, Jamaica is a much further destination for you from SD! So, you will have to factor that in.

  • We are going to Maui and can't wait!

That was a big deciding factor for us as well!
  • I would check out Frommer's website to compare the 2. As well you may want to take a look at the weather for Jamaica. Hurrican season is June to November.
