France, Italy or both?

My fiance and I are trying to decide where to go on our honeymoon.  We are both teachers and have the time in the summer to travel...but the big question is to where!!!  France sounds wonderful with the Loire Valley wineries, Paris and the French Riviera while Italy sounds absolutely amazing with to die for food, wine and gelato!   Any recommendations?

Re: France, Italy or both?

  • What is your budget? If you have the time and the money go for it! Do both. You could do a really affordable trip and visit all those areas and if it is a once in a lifetime trip I think it would be worth it to just take the time and relax and do your dream honeymoon.

  • If you have the chance to do both, do it by all means, but if you had to choose one I would definitely recommend Italy.  I've been both places (Paris and Nice, for France; and Milan, Venice, Florence, and Pisa for Italy) and I generally found Italians to be much warmer and more inviting, and it added an overall nicer feeling to the trip!

  • I've never had a desire to go to France, so I'd say Italy.  I've been many times, all over the country and love it.  My family lives by Venice and it's a great city to visit.  It's kind of pricey though and you don't need more than 2 days so I'd recommend taking a train from there and going to Rome which is awesome.  There's so much history and so much to see.
  • Both places are lovely, but for different reasons. It really depends on your interests which might be better. I agree with the comment above that the Italians are muh friendlier than the French, which is always nice when you're in a strange new place. Both have tons of art, amazing food, and great historic sites. Highly recommend doing both if you can, but I'd spend more time in Italy. All of the big cities in Italy Florence, Venice, Rome are so amazing and different that you'll want time a few days in all cities. France you could probably do in a few days. Two to three days in Paris, a day or two in the country or down south. Let me know if you decide on doing anything in Italy and want any tips! I lived in Florence for a while and know quite a bit about getting around, what museums to check out, etc... Have fun!
  • I'd do Italy.  I spent a month in Rome while in college and didn't see everything I wanted to see.  PP is right - the Italians are warm and inviting.

My only word of warning is to know that actual Italian food isn't the same as American Italian food.  I loved their lasagna (with lamb instead of beef) but hated their pizza.  Lots and lots of seafood options too, since the entire country is pretty coastal.  But yeah, I vote Italy.

  • Depending on your budget, length of HM and time of year; you could easily do both. Like pp's said, it depends where your interests lie and what you want to see/do. I would start in Paris or the southern most point you're interested in in Italy and work north of south.  Do a multicity/open-jaw flight (into one city and out another) get to/from Europe to make the most of your time.
