Name Change/License/SS update

Hey ladies!  So, just to forwarn those that haven't changed their name/license yet, go to Social Security first!!!  The CT DMV now links to the social security office to match/verify your new name to what SS has on file.  If it doesn't match, they won't put your new name on your license.... oh yes... I found that out the hard way.  Went to the DMV first today, to wait in the nice long line (even though I got there when they opened) to be told that I have to go to the SS office first.  After I made the change there, they then told me to try and go back to the DMV and see if the new name was in the system, but it might take a day.  So, back to the DMV I went to wait in line again to find out that no... it wasn't in the computer system.  So, yay me!  I get to go to the DMV 3 times within a 24 hour period!  Definitely not the way I want to spend my Saturday morning. ick.

Oh, and best to do SS at least a day before you go to the DMV to avoid the dabacle I just went through.  I asked if it had to do with me applying for a first time CT license with a NY license, and they said no.  That is now the policy for everyone that goes in needing a name change on their license.

Wow how annoying. I definitely did SS and DMV in the same day and had no problems at all. You would think they would have an easier way, seeing that they get woman changing their name everyday!!

Ughh I'm sorry you had to go through that! I went to the SS office first, and the DMV photo license center the next day since it was only open certain days and there's literally no wait.

Thanks so much for this update! I hadn't even thought about having to go to the SS office. Now since I was born in a different state do I just need my old SS card and birth cert? Thanks again!

At the SS office, I showed them my marriage certificate, gave them my SS# and showed them my NY license.  They have a sign up though that says to have your SS card out, but I didn't have to show it, just give them the #.  That was all I needed there.  The DMV is a whole other story, for out of state people you need your old license, birth cert or passport, marriage license, piece of mail w/ date stamp in last 30 days ummm... I think that was it.  Can't remember.  I brought in everything I could possibly need.

So sorry you had to go through that!

DH and I made a beeline for the New Haven SSA office immediately after our trip to the Vital Records Office at 9 a.m. the Monday after we married. We only had two business days in the States (not counting ten days in Hawaii for the honeymoon) before heading back overseas so we were intent to at least get the name change through with the SSA.  (Sadly, both those business days were Mondays, so I still haven't gone to the DMV, even though we married in July.)

When the SSA clerk behind the counter handed me a form with all my information from their system for verification, I told her everything was correct except for my middle name, listed as "Marie" on my birth certificate, which was on the counter in front of us.  The clerk said "No, ma'am, we know your name is correct.  We've got 'Maria' in the system as your middle name."

So, apparently my SS# has been linked for twently-eight years to a name other than the one on my birth certificate.  DH and I had a good laugh about how I never knew I was Hispanic!

Soon2BeMrsTing that's funny!  The SSA person was actually nice, but boy this has been a pain in the butt w/ the DMV.  I went again today and of course even though the SS person said it would be in the system today, it wasn't... yup, so I get to go back for a fourth time on Wednesday when I have time to go deal with it.

The person that waited on me today told me that if you go to get your new license within 30 days of the marriage, the agents there can 'at their discretion' choose to waive the SSA match in the system.  I thought that was totally crap, since the time limit shouldn't really matter.  I'm only changing my name once, and it's with a 'qualifying' event so to speak... it's not like I didn't have the proper documentation to support it.  So, those people that went and didn't have a problem recently, it's probably because it was within 30 days of their wedding and the agent chose to be nice and bend the rules.  I guess that's what I get for putting it off until now!
