Name Change - Social Security! HELP!!!

I just went to the SS office to change my name. I got my number and realized there were 30 people ahead of me, and no one was moving..... SO I walked out. I"m now going to look into mailing the information in - but can't find a real clear answer...WHAt DO I NEED TO SEND?

Where do you live? In the Willimantic office there is never a line..I was in and out in 5 minutes..may be worth the drive. When I went all I needed was a copy of my marriage license and had to write down my SS# for them and then they shredded it.

I live in West Hartford..... I really don't want to drive, when the Hartford office is only 2 min from my office..... Changing your name is a real PITA! Especially when you've been out for 2.5 weeks for the wedding and honeymoon - I really can't keep ducking out! Last week I spent nearly 2 hours at the DMV! UGH! rant over - thanks for listneing ;)

I didn't wait very long in New London, either. I know they had separate groups depending on what you were there for - name changes obviously take less time than people who were going over benefits or whatever.I didn't even know you could just send stuff in, but I'd imagine you'd fill out the form online along with proof of your identity and your actual marriage certificate. I know they needed to see my ID and the certificate with the seal which is why I thought you had to do it in person. I may have filled out something else, or else the guy just typed all my info in the computer - I can't remember.

I went to SS office to change mine, so I'm not totally sure, and I didn't have to show anything except my marriage license. But on the application that I filled out, it looks like you may need your birth cert, and license or passport, as well as marriage license. I'm not 100% sure, though. Your best bet may be to call and find out what you can do.Good luck!

We went to the New Haven SS office at lunchtime and it wasn't even that bad. I think I waited for 30 minutes. I had to fill out the SS-5 name change form and show them my marriage license and driver's license. They don't accept your current SS card as a form of ID. I waited only about 5 minutes in Ansonia, but I knew the Bridgeport office would be crazy so I opted to stay out of the big cities. Also is there a way you can go during an off time, like late afternoon.  It may be better.

I went to Bristol and the wait wasn't too bad... maybe (maaaybe) 20 minutes and it's not that far from WH.

bristol is probably a good idea...i would think the hartford office is always busy just b/c its a big city, plus all the big towns around it...

There is an office in New Britain as well and I didn't have to wait there when I went last year to replace my SS card.

Could you go during your lunch break? I went to the Hartford office around lunchtime on a Monday last month, and only had to wait 5-10 minutes. I'm not sure if you can mail the info or not--that would be easy--but I think I read somewhere they had to see your ID in person.
