Anyone gone in September???

So....my FI and I are trying to decide where to go on our honeymoon, but we are torn.  At first we wanted to go to the Sandals in St. Lucia, but the hurricane season scared us so we decided on Aruba, Los Cabos, or Puerto Vallarta...away from hurricanes.  Well we hired a travel agent and she told us St. Lucia should be fairly safe in Sept.....maybe an afternoon shower.  She said we should go where we REALLY wanted to go and just get travelers insurance.  What do you all think???  Anyone taken this chance and gone to the caribbean during hurricane season?  Is it worth the risk or should we just go somewhere 'safer'
TIA!

Re: Anyone gone in September???

  • we did the same thing--really wanted to go to mexico where it is still hurricane season in sept.  we toyed with aruba because it is "outside of the hurricane belt" but decided to go where we wanted to go and just got the insurance.  we are really happy that we made this decision--we are going where we want, not paying extra to go to one of the three islands you listed (where we didnt really want to go anyway), and if we see the weather is awful right before we leave, we will just reschedule.  but to be honest, everytime i am in the carribean during the rainy season, it rains for like 1/2 hour in the afternoon.  then back to the tropics!
  • I understand your dilemma!  My FI were also interested in going to Caribbean during September and at first, we didn't really care about risking it and staying in the hurricane belt.  Our other area of interest was exploring out west (Arizona, Grand Canyon, etc.)

After thinking and talking more about it, my FI's number one wish was for great weather.  Everyone knows there are no guarantees when it comes to weather, but because its a trip of a lifetime, we decided to go somewhere "safe."  Especially because we opted for a Caribbean honeymoon over a western exploration.

Our travel agent told us the same - go where you really want to go and opt for travel insurance.  Just ask yourself if a storm is predicted during your travel dates, will that totally ruin your plans?  And if rescheduling is an actually option based on your life schedules, take the chance!

It may have been an easier decision for us because we did not have our heart sent on one island.  We are going to Aruba (Bucuit Beach Resort) and I CAN NOT WAIT!!!

    Good luck and happy planning!
  • We're also getting married in September and planning on going to Mexico at the end of the month.
My TA said that yes, it is hurricane season, but you can't let it stop you.  She said that most tour companies won't even send you away if they know of a hurricane coming or if one had already hit and everything was destroyed.
But getting the insurance will help if you end up with bad weather while you're there.

  • St Lucia, Aruba and the west coast of mexico all have been hit by hurricanes. Aruba is hit less thant he rest of the caribbean but it happens.
the west coast of MX hurricane season goes until oct 15 so all of your choices have the chance of being hit.
that being said-I vote for trip insurance that includes weather related cancellation/interruption.
