Hotel questions

Hey ladies,I'm planning on sending save the dates end of September or early October but I want to have my hotel room blocks all set before I send them because almost all my family are out of state. When you blocked rooms did you go to see the hotels and look at the rooms or did you do it all over the phone? Also, what questions are good to ask? Anyone book rooms in Middletown or Cromwell? Those are the two towns I'm looking at since my venue is in Middletown. Thanks!

We did go look at the hotel before we booked it. It was nice to see the suite we will have and amenities for our guests.Hm things to ask:Are you responsible for rooms in the block that don't get booked?Any deals for the bride and groom if a certain # of rooms get booked in your block? Can you add rooms to the block if it fills up?Is there a shuttle available to go back and forth to your venue (if you are interested)Do they charge extra for OOT bags, etc (if you are planning on doing them)Sorry that's all I can think of at the moment!!

i talked to the comfort inn and suites in cromwell and in meriden, both were reasonably priced, as was the hampton inn in meriden- all were under $100 a night(i think $90 as well, but cant remember for sure), hampton inn just got renovated, even though it was very clean before. talked to the coutryard by marriott in cromwell, wasnt thrilled with their prices, esp since it didnt have contiental breakfast, which hampton inn and comfort inn both did. that was something that was a must for me- i didnt want my family venturing out when they dont know the area. i did everything over the phone initially, but i did check out a room once i had decided, but we also only called hotel chains we had stayed at before, so we knew waht to expect. we also asked waht extra things we would get- i.e. the hampton inn in waterbury is comping us a room for the night since we have at least 15 room booked also, instead of doing OOT bags, we decided to do a hospitality suite, with light refreshments and that sort of thing so people had a place to come visit(we have alot of OOTers). the hotel also comp'd us the conference room for one of the nights, and gave us a discount for the other night

Definitely go look at the hotel before you book.  FI & I were going to book the closest hotel to our venue and the entire place smelled like musty cigarette smoke.  (And it was a big name chain!)  So we ended up going to a nicer, less-smelly hotel a few more miles away.Sorry - my wedding is in New Haven, no help for actual hotels!
