Name Change

Hello - I was wondering if anyone could tell me how long it takes to change your last name? We get back from our honeymoon on a Wednesday and I was hoping to spend Thursday and Friday taking care of that. But then I started thinking that you probably need your marriage license to change your name on your SS card, and doesn't that get mailed to you at a later date? I will be living in Milford if that effects anything. Thanks for your help!

It was SO easy!  First I went to the SS office and applied for a new card using my marriage license.  There is also a form you need to print out & fill out.  Takes 2 weeks to receive the card. The next day I went to DMV with my marriage license and the printed receipt from the SS office.  Beware: they take a new picture! Then I mailed my passport off.  The form is also available online.  Now I am just finishing up with my credit card accounts, etc.

Oh, good to know that you can go to the DMV with just the receipt from the SS office. But how does the marriage license work? Do I get a copy right away? I thought that when we got the license they told us that it would get mailed to us...

We got married in Newtown so I had to request certified copies from the town hall which were $10 each.  I mailed them a check and the info they needed with a self-addressed, stamped envelope and they sent the certified copies back about 2 days later.

Thanks, I just called Southington since we're getting married at the Aquaturf. How many copies would you recommend getting? Is one sufficient?

Be careful with the marriage license......If your ceremony is at the Aqua Turf - then  it will first go to the Southingtont town hall and then to Milford (where  you live!) how fast this happens will all depend on the Southington town hall. Not sure how long you are going on your honeymoon for - but I ended up picking mine up at the town hall where the ceremony was. Two and a half weeks after my wedding -t hey still hadn't sent it on to the town I live in. It had been signed  off and made official a week after we were married - but the mailing process takes some time!   If you haven't done it yet - go to the Southington town hall - do your paperwork there and request the certified copy from them, rather than waiting until it gets back to your home town. Also - you need the license for the DMV.... That's all they look at - don't worry about the SS receipt - I went there second so I didn't have it at the DMV!

I got 5 certified copies.  My employer requested 1 for their file which they won't be returning.  Also, I had to mail 1 with my passport which I won't be getting back for several weeks.

The DMV I went to needed to see the marriage certificate, not the SS receipt, so just bring both in case when you go.

The whole process from date of marriage to the date we received our marriage cert was 4 weeks long. We applied for the license in Milford, but got married in New Haven so we had to wait until NH took care of it and that took a while! But, the day that we got our marriage cert we walked right over to the New Haven SS office, I applied for a new card, then we went to the Milford DMV (I needed the marriage certificate to prove that I was married) and I got a new license. Then I went to my bank and changed my name on the account. I got my new SS card within a week of applying for it. So, the thing that took the longest was actually getting the certificate from New Haven City Hall. The actual name-change process was fast and simple.

We got 3 certified copies. 1 for us, 1 that I carry in my purse in case someone needs to see it, and an extra that I'll need to send away with my Passport (when I get around to it!)

I actually just did all of this today!  It was so simple.I went to town hall in Monroe, because that is where the wedding was and got 2 certified copies.  The town we live in, Milford, still does not have a copy.I then went to the SS office in Ansonia and in about 5 minutes the woman had ordered me my new card and gave me my receipt. Then I went straight to the DMV photo license center in Milford.  All the woman there asked me for was my marriage license and drivers license.  Again, this took about 5 minutes.  Since you live in Milford, I highly recommend going here!  It is usually quiet, and they are open until at least 6pm (some nights 7).Good luck!
