Savannah in December?

FI and I are considering Savannah, GA or Charleston, SC for our HM. We're from North FL and need a budget-friendly HM in driving distance. We'll be HMing in December, so does anyone have any advice/info on either of these locations or any others? Thanks!

  • You will definitely need a coat in both of those places, especially if you will be walking around at night.  It won't be beach weather in either location.  What kinds of activities are you looking for?
  • We'd like to go somewhere a little colder since we've never really been able to experience a cold Christmas. I hear Savannah is really beautiful in the winter but I'm not sure how much there is to do there. While we do love the beach, we get to experience it year round so it isn't that important for us to visit on our HM. My FI loves anything historical, and I love visiting shops and restaurants. We love a little adventure, too.

  • I live in Charleston, SC.  This year it has been unseasonably warm.  Like today it was low-mid 70's. If you're in northern FL our weather is probably pretty similar to yours.  A bit cooler, I guess.

Definitely a lot of history in Charleston.  I'm originally from Michigan, so I've enjoyed the carriage rides and everything in Downtown Charleston. There is also a Ft. Sumter tour, a battleship you can visit, and lots of plantations.  Also lots of shopping and restaurants as well! It really is beautiful here.

I know your post was originally about Savannah (I've only been there once) but since you mentioned Charleston I figured I'd comment on that! :)

  • Hi! I am also from North Florida (JAX) and now live in Charlotte, NC.  When the FI was living in Charlotte before I moved here, we would meet in between a lot in both places. We got engaged in Savannah and by now living in CLT, we visit Charleston a lot in the summer for the beach.

After spending a lot of time in both places, I would say the Charleston is the ultimate spot between the two!  There is a lot of history in both places but nothing beats Charleston for me.  The weather will make it perfect for a cozy buggy ride, a visit to the fort, and a walk through the market.  I highly suggest a van tour through town since your husband is a history buff!  A lot of the guides are native Charlstonians and have a wealth of knowledge about the Low Country.

The food options are also endless in Charleston! Good Luck!
  • Charleston is beautiful, I lived there for 8 years.  There are so many things to do and many amazing restaurants that would be great for romantic dinners.  Not sure what your budget is, but I highly recommend Charleston Place Hotel.  They have unparalleled customer service and will throw in some extras if it's your honeymoon.  It is literally in the center of the activity downtown, and within walking distance of shops, restaurants, parks, etc.

You can take a harbour tour, go to Fort Sumter, or see the Hunley (a confederate submarine).  And you might get lucky with an unusually warm day too - on New Years Day last year it got up to 70 degrees!
