WHich Hawaiian Island...

I have never been to Hawaii so I am hoping that someone out there has- which island is the best to stay at if you are looking for a lot to do as far as sightseeing, nightlife, tourist attractions, but is still romantic?

Re: WHich Hawaiian Island...

  • Definitely Kauai!!!  According to some of our guides who moved among various islands to work, the other islands are a lot hotter, dryer, and crowded.  Kauai was peaceful, exotic, lush, and so easy to get around.  It's about 40 min. max to the top of the North Shore and about 30 min to the bottom of the South Shore.  We did ziplining, horseback riding, atving, a luau, waterfall jumping/swimming, atving, a boat tour of the Na Pali coast, spent time at the beach and ate at very nice places as well as awesome local joints. I would definitely go back!  there are also river tours, kayaking, helicopter tours, the Waimea Canyon (which we saw) and it is all so easy to get to.  We stayed on the East Shore, which was very central.  South Shore is more touristy and North Shore more rural.  Beautiful beaches are everywhere and the scenery is gorgeous.  Food is yummy and there are plenty of hiking opportunities.
  • It's a totally subjective question. My favourite islands are the Big Island and Maui, but Oahu is by far the best for nightlife (if you're into clubbing). If by nightlife, you mean great restaurants and places to have a cocktail, you can find those on any of the islands. If you're not outdoorsy, I actually think Oahu is your best bet in terms of sightseeing.
  • We went to Oahu and the Big Island.  If you are looking for romantic, I recommend the Volcano Village Lodge in Volcano.  It was an amazing B&B near the national park.  A little pricey, but worth it.  We stayed 3 nights before going to Kona!

  • Maui gets my vote - BUT, like kaesha said, it's very subjective.  I would go to your local Barnes & Noble or Borders and pick up the Blue Books (I think they're really called the Ultimate Guides?) and check them out.  Then you'll have a better idea of what's available on each island.  Oahu is definitely the busiest and will have the most nightlife, but I have absolutely no interest in visiting it.  You'll want to make sure you do your homework to decide what fits your interests best.

  • I spent a week in Maui and Kauai and they were both amazing and both romantic. I would suggest splitting time between two islands if you can!!!

That's it!  Thanks. :)  I've been calling it the Blue Bible for so long that I can't remember what the real name is!  It's a great series with all the information you could ever need.

  • Honestly, you probably can't go wrong with any of the islands.  They are each going to be awesome in their own way, but it really depends on the type of activities you are looking to do that will determine which island will be best for you.

If you want lots of activities, and the "go go go" kind of vacation, Oahu might be right for you.  If you want the laid back, do nothing but lay on the beach vacation, then Kauai or Maui might be right for you (although I know there's still lots to do, just I know both have great beaches too).  If you want to see lava, it's only found on the Big Island. Etc, etc, etc.  They all have unique things to offer, and they all have the same feel to offer too (you will get amazing sunsets on all islands, etc).

If you give us more information on what you are looking to do, maybe we can help narrow down your search for you (sightseeing, nightlife, romance, etc is all subjective, and they all have aspects of each) Personally, I have been to Oahu, Maui and the Big Island and my favorite so far is the Big Island (but what makes it my favorite might make it your least favorite, etc).

My FI and I JUST had this convo as we are planning our honeymoon there for July. It was between Oahu and Maui for us and we decided on Oahu.. We spoke with many people we know who had been to both. From what I've heard (as I have never been either), Maui is gorgeous and does have SOME things to do, but is more a "lay around on the beach" kind of place. Oahu is more busy, more tourists, but lots of sightseeing opportunities and more nightlife. We wanted the best of both worlds, so we're going to Oahu for 10 days. We'll do active things like hiking, horseback riding with some sightseeing like going to Pearl Harbor, but also have lots of time for beach bumming.

  • We just got back from spending two weeks in Maui, and there were things we still didn't get a chance to do. There is a TON to do in Maui, aside from the beautiful beaches. It is a small island and easy to get around, so you can see the whole island. We did the road to Hana (the whole way around), snorkling, sailing, ATV-ing, sunrise at the volcano, luau, Ulalena show, a magic/comedy show, and dined at some amazing restaurants. Of course we also checked out several beautiful beaches around the island and lounged by the pool, too.

We enjoyed the laid back and romantic vibe of Maui. The city (Honalulu, Oahu) was not where we wanted to stay on our honeymoon.

As an aside, the revealed books are amazing, but I wouldn't buy them just to decide where to go. If you want to get a glimpse of what each island has to offer, go to tripadvisor.com.
  • We went to Oahu and Maui.  Oahu is very crowded but had some amazing restaurants.  We aren't that much into the nightlife, but wanted to see Pearl Harbor and eat a lot so we spent a few days there.  We then went to Maui for a week and it was amazing!   There is a lot to do and it can be as romantic, beachy, secluded, etc. as you want!  There are many different areas on Maui, so check it out!

  • I have been to Maui 3 times and Oahu twice so I wanted a new island. I'll be going o Kauai next month for 10 days! I booked 3 nights at the Kauai Marriott Resort in Lihue for some pampering and 7 nights in a condo in Princeville for some private enjoyment. I am looking forward to the many excursions that were mentioned above.

  • Each island is different and awesome in its own way and everyone has their favorites (mine is Kauai).  Definitely do a little research and find out which one has the atmosphere and activities that interest you most.
