Honeymoon to Jamaica

I just put a deposit yesterday on a honeymoon to Jamaica for next July when I saw the 50 Best Honeymoons article and there was a Knot Update that said the following about Jamaica:

Due to recent events, please take caution before planning your honeymoon in this location.

I'm not sure if I should freak out and try to change my trip or if I should not worry about it? We booked at one of the Sandals resorts. Thanks for the help!

We just booked our trip to Jamaica for June...what events??

Is it an old article? Maybe they're talking about the riots in Kingston? We're not going anywhere near there, so I'm ok with it.

  • Yeah maybe it was an old article? Or could it possibly be talking about the hurricanes? But I guess that would be anywhere in the caribbean so idk but I am curious because that's where I booked my honeymoon too...
  • I haven't heard of anything going on in Jamaica that should prevent you from traveling there....

Jamaica, like most other places, is not a place where it's safe to walk of the resort on your own, but that's nothing new. Not sure what "recent events" it was talking about.

  • They are probably referring to the violence that arose when the US wanted to extradite a Jamaican drug lord. This happened earlier this year and was widely reported in the news. As MarenoRabeno mentioned this happened in the Kingston area of Jamaica. Not sure if there have been additional issues since then.
  • I've been to Jamaica before - and we just went to Sandals in St. Lucia for our HM. I can tell you that I did feel somewhat unsafe in Jamaica. We were told not to leave the resort. I'm sure if you look into it, they will let you switch your Sandals trip to a different island.

  • There was a travel warning to there for a long time this summer but that's not why I'd change your reservations.  I'd change them because Jamaica and Sandals in Jamaica sucks.  We went there recently for our honeymoon.  YOu can read the whole story of how much sandals sucks in the vendor reviews below.  Click and scroll all the way to the bottom.  I think Antigua or the US Virgin Islands or Bermuda are all much nicer places to travel to than Jamaica.  Jamaica is like traveling to a third world country.  It doesn't make you feel good to see people living in shambles while you are in your all inclusive resort.
  • Thanks for all of the advice! Not sure what we'll do, we're looking in to different Sandals resorts, but they're harder to get to on the days & times we want to travel. The article was posted only a few days ago so I'm assuming it's not outdated.

    Thanks again!
