affordable photogs

So I am starting to look into photographs and was shocked at how expensive they all are!! I know there have been posts before about photog recommendations, but I guess I'm looking for some advice on cheaper ones! I want someone with experience who is going to do a good job, but we are also on a tight budget and I want to find the best deal possible. Any advice?

Thanks!!

Do you mind me asking what your budget is?  It might help us give you better recommendations since I've found photogs in various ranges!  But the better ones are through the roof lol

John LoConte was our photog & I loved him! He is very budget friendly (and he will work with you if you don't want something in the package or need to work it out so it's in your budget) www.johnlophoto.com

We didn't want to spend a crazy amount on pictures either. We're using McHale Photography out of Watertown and they have been great. They were very flexible as well and they do have a website available.

What area of CT are you located in?

I second wrdgirl's question. One thing I've learned from TK is that what is affordable to one person is not necessarily affordable to others.
When we started searching around for a photog I almost died with sticker shock!!! Especially since all the photographers I fell in love with just happened to be high priced. We ended up getting an awesome deal from our photoghers since they were relocating to the New England area.

Ideally I would like to spend about 1500, but could spend 2,000 at most. That being said, cheaper than 1500 would be awesome too!! But so far that has been hard to find. We live in East Haddam and our wedding is going to be next summer at The Riverhouse in Haddam.

    Thanks for your help!!

Try Jena Alviti Photography... she is reasonable! :)

Sticker shock, I've had that too.  It was difficult to fall in love with a photographer but not be able to afford them and a few I could afford but I couldn't afford to get any prints or perks.  Really important to ask what price their prints are if you want to order something printed by their company.    I really liked Parsons Photography out of Coventry CT because she had many different choices for packages.  She has a really affordable green package.

Keep looking, I'm sure you will find something.

I hear ya on the sticker shock! I had great experiences with the photogs I used. DH and I won a contest for a free Engagement Photo session with Jewel Photography and Julie did our photo session and she was awesome to work with and our pictures came out awesome! We would have serioiusly considered her if we hadn't already booked our photography and videography package beforehand.

MJS Photography did our photography and videography for our wedding. We got a great deal on a joint package with them and they had great payment plans.

Alisonmariephotography.com - For $1800 I have 9 hours of wedding photography w/ 2 photographers, engagement pics session, photo guest book, pics on CD w/ rights to reproduce. Her photos are gorgeous, and her base package is $1500 or $1600.

I haven't used them, but I've heard The Pro's have great photography packages that are in that price range.

one major thing to ask that I have found is wether or not you get the person you talk with! You may have great chemistry with the photographer you speak with but if they have multiple people, ask who is free that day and try to meet with that person who you will get for the wedding---you may not get along that well! You need to look at your personalities with theirs and your bridal party--My FI can be very shy at times/take awkward photos, and we got along great with our photographer--somewhat pricier but midrange--- Photography by Roman in Shelton (he was a previous student my Mom had in grade school! so we trust him --he was taking photos even then!!!)

Also ask if theyre sending and intern...thats something you need to be careful with because they may be assigned to cover something and miss some great shots/moments!!

    Good luck!

We used Kim Hoyt from Chateau Photography.  She has packages in all different price ranges. She is the owner/photographer so Kim is the one you would work with.  We loved her personality and the pictures that we got.  We have gotten so many compliments on our wedding album and the parent's albums that we received as part of our package.  We originally needed three parent albums and Kim worked with us with our package to make sure we got them.

I second John LoConte who is based off of Boston MA.  I got him for about $1635 for 8 hours + engagement session + travel expense but no 2nd photog (although he said if his wife tags along he may have a 2nd photog but won't charge us for that so we don't know but it's not a big deal since we have a small wedding), a photo album nor online proofing.  I just need a photog and can always get an album at a later date and I don't care for much about online proofing (he is sending us an entire CD anyways).

You can try Jen Fiereck or Melanie Christine (they can both do a package for your budget).  I also heard someone mentioned a photog based in RI for under $2000 for a lot more.  Sorry I forgot the name (you might wanna do a search on this board) but she's pretty good too.

    Good luck!

I hear ya on photography issues....I'm dealing with the same thing right now (and I'm looking in the same price range).  I just talked with a photographer who I fell in love with (we just "clicked") and then he sent me a quote of 3k+ and I was heartbroken because that is so not my budget, which is why I get mad when looking at photographer's website (or any vendor website) that doesn't have some general pricing information posted on their website :(  Good luck!

We booked with Chuck May. He is out of Brookfield.  His prices are great and when we met with him we really liked him. $1350 for full day coverage with an assistant, some prints (can't remember exactly what), and an engagement session (with a photo mat for the reception).  We are looking to buy our album after the wedding and his prices for albums are great too!  We met with Roman (mentioned earlier) and thought he was great, but a bit more expensive.

jcbender; did you have your wedding in brookefield at the foxhill inn? thats where ours is :)

I know roman is slightly more expensive- however i know for us right now we are sharing expenses with my parents, and although we are very budget conscious; some things they will spend on if they like it---i.e. with roman my mom loves him :) (as do we)

    good luck though!

Parsons Photography offers unlimited sessions up through your wedding day - you can get rock the dress pictures, budoir photos, engagement sessions, etc. all included in the base price for photos. (Of course, the unlimited sessions depend on her availability) and the price for her photos are incredibly reasonable. I have attended several events of which she was the photog and I have always been impressed by her photos of me.

Make sure you check the photo packages and prices as well. I won a free photo session with a different photog. I really liked the photog until I went to order photos and they were out-of-this-world expensive - even for something as small as a 4X6.
