Re: Hotel suggestions....

  • We are going next march and splitting our trip between Arenal, staying at The Lost Iguana which is non AI and Papagayo at the Hilton which is AI. We will be renting a car so we can come and go as we please. We are also flying into San Jose and out of Liberia. I'm not sure all what activities we are doing but dh is def zip lining and we are hiking around the volcano in Arenal. So far for the two hotel rooms we are at 3500, lux suite at Iguana and Jr suite with plunge pool at Hilton.
  • I should mention we are going for 7 nights and our budget is 7k

I don't think Costa Rica is known for their all-inclusives, but when we were there food and drinks were very affordable. As long as you have a hotel with a restraunt you should be fine. And don't be afraid to eat local foods--some of our favorite meals!

Try the hot springs near Arenal. Amazing! Hiking in the Rain Forest in Manual Antonio also crazy fun. And amazing beaches.

The great thing about CR is that they have a lot of really great hotels for very affordable prices. You shouldn't even have to spend $6-7K for 1 week. I wouldn't pay more than $200/night anywhere there.

Def rent a 4X4 car, a GPS, and be prepared for some crazy driving! Costa Rica was made for an adventure. :)

Also, don't plan to stay in San Jose--it's not worth it and probably where the most crime occurs. We had to stay one night, but left early the next morning.
  • We went in June of last year for our anniversary.  I think we came in around $7k, so you could definitely pare it down a bit, but here's where we stayed at what I thought:

    1. 3 nights at El Silencio Lodge - an absolutely amazing spa and wellness-oriented resort; excellent accommodations (spacious casita cabins, a large porch with two rocking chairs and a private outdoor jacuzzi tub), delicious meals (included), out of this world mud massage, excellent service - I would definitely put this in the itinerary.  If you are planning to go to Arenal, I think it's a great place to "stop" along the way.  I would definitely put this first in your itinerary because it is cooler and mistier.  This place, to us, was myseriously magical

    2. 3 nights at Arenal Nayara - gets fabulous reviews, but we are picky travelers and thought it was just ok.  The accommodations are beautiful, but the service and food were just ok.  It comes highly recommended for honeymooners and I think most people love it.  I would probably recommend it, but I wouldn't stay there again myself.

    3. 3 nights at Lapa Rios - FAVORITE!  Just check out their website.  This is one of the most unique places I've ever stayed.  It's worth the splurge and I'd think you definitely have that in the budget. Excellent accommodations, food, service, tours included.

    4. 3 nights at Oxygen Jungle Villas - skip it.  We weren't impressed.  That's all I have to say. :)

Let me know if I can help any more!
