Where should we go for our Honeymoon?

I'm looking for suggestions but I have ideas in mind. I would really love to get out of the U.S., possibly the Carribean. We are on a budget so anything more than $2000 is out of our price range really. The cheaper the better. Somewhere tropical, romantic, and fun. Our wedding will be June 1, 2013, so we are planning to go June 2-8.

I would prefer places with a shopping center or town nearby, night clubs because we love dancing, and maybe someplace that offers swimming with dolphins (because that's always been on my bucket list). I wouldn't mind any place with live shows/entertainment, but I'm trying to keep my fiance away from casinos. We are on our honeymoon afterall and I'm not a fan of casinos.

If anyone has any places in mind or wouldn't mind sharing their honeymoon destinations and stories, please do. I love to hear stories and to give me ideas!

I think the carribbean might be tight on your budget.  You have to think about flights, hotels, spending money, food, and transportation.

Have you thought about a cruise?  All inclusive and very cost effective.

EDIT: We swam with dolphins in Bermuda.  It was nearly $500.  That's the only place I've looked into it doing it so I have no basis for comparison.  We were there, it was our honeymoon, I didn't care.  I wanted to do it.  I just wanted you to know that it might not be a cheap excursion, but you might find far better prices at cheaper islands in the Carribbean!  Goodness knows, Bermuda wasn't cheap :-)
  • Have you thought about coming to Canada? Detroit is pretty much right on the border and you're within driving distance of the GTA. You could also probably get cheap flights to Montreal, Gatineau or even the East Coast.  Montreal and the East Coast are both very romantic places. I think my favourite Canadian city would have to be Montreal. There's tons to do and see and I love the old buildings and cobblestone streets. The East Coast has lots of cozy B&B's and you can be right on the ocean.

  • I was going to recommend a cruise but then you mentioned the casino thing. Your best option is probably somewhere in South FL. I love the beaches in Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach. You can also look into Nassau, Bahamas.
  • Yeah I think the Caribbean might be out of your budget, especially if you are flying in from Detroit.  I second Florida - go to the gulf side.  Great beaches, WARM water, and there are places there that will let you do the romantic nights or wild nights.  Personally, I recommend Seaside, FL.  It's in between Panama City Beach (PCB) and Destin.  Both PCB and Destin have lots of bars, clubs, etc.  Seaside is just adorable and quaint.  It's a little pricey but could probably be done on your budget.  If you've ever seen the Truman Show, they filmed it in Seaside.  That "perfect world" that Truman lives in is actually a real place - even the tiny post office!

Just know that if you go to Florida, Mexico, or the Caribbean, the entire southern half of the country goes there during spring break and summer vacation.  I grew up in Georgia, and I have actually run into people I know down in PCB who I didn't realize were going to be there at the same time as me.  Really random.  Lots of high school kids go to the panhandle because it's pretty drivable from around Tennessee downward.  Lots of 19-20 year olds take cruises because they are cheap and you can drink legally in Mexico at that age.  So just keep that in mind.

  • Being that I live in Miami... My best advice for you would be key west... It has dolphins explorations Great beaches and marine life.. The night life in key west is like a never ending club life.. With great bars and clubs.. You'd have the best of both worlds.. Romance, water andrelaxation during the day and party all night :
  • Cancun Mexico is my recommendation.
  • Mexico.  There's no shortage of resorts there.

  • With your budget you could do an all inclusive in Mexico or take a Caribbean cruise. Most ships have casinos on them though, but Disney cruises do not.
  • Maybe try a cruise to the carribean. Those are usually cheapish. I don't know if they are that cheap though.
