Fondant vs. Buttercream

Are you all doing a buttercream frosting or fondant on your cakes? I've heard fondant tastes funny, but it definitely looks "cleaner." I am not planning on doing a fancy design, so I suppose buttercream would be fine, for what I have in mind. I just want simple white icing, maybe some flowers.

I'm meeting the cake vendor next week and she told me she will have some samples of fondant for me to taste...but I figured I would get some opinions here. Fondant or buttercream?

Re: Fondant vs. Buttercream

  • We haven't picked ours out yet, but I'm 99% sure we will be going with Buttercream. I think Fondant looks beautiful, but I don't care for the taste as much.  That's just me though!
  • I'm going with buttercream.  I actually like the look better, even though fondant is cleaner lines, I think buttercream looks more "edible" and appetizing.  I've found some gorgous buttercream inspiration pics on pinterest.
  • If you don't need to do anything fancy...BUTTERCREAM ALL THE WAY!

    Congrats and good luck!
  • We were on the fence also until we met with the baker and saw the pictures of the cakes she did. The fondant ones were amazing, so clean and sharp looking. While the butter cream ones were pretty but not nearly as nice.

Also i think a big seller for us was we didn’t want flowers on the cake and the butter cream cakes without flowers were really blah looking to us.

She let us taste the fondant and it really wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. She said they make their own with marshmallow idk if that’s why it didn’t taste bad or if everyone does it that way.
  • buttercream for me!! Fondant does look pretty but, I dont like the taste

Did you use Cakes by Donna? That's who I am using and she told me the same thing about her fondant being made of marshmallow. Maybe we are using the same vendor :) Her work is great on both types of cakes, so I'm not worried either way.

  • When we met with our baker, they said that 90% of the wedding cakes they do actually aren't fondant! I was surprised because I always thought wedding cake = fondant lol! IMO fondant doesn't taste that good anyway, it's too sugary for me. Our baker actually had a whipped icing on our sample cake which was amazing and had the smooth sleek look of fondant, so I was sold. Buttercream will still look great and will taste even better, so I vote BUTTERCREAM! Good luck! :)

  • We're not doing fondant but thats because I don't want it to look the way fondant does. We are going for a more rough iced look so fondant really wouldn't work for that. Here's a pic to explain what I mean:

As for the taste, I've had some where you really can't taste it and some where you can so I guess it really depends on the baker.

  • Buttercream! Hands down! Granted, my cake is included at my venue and buttercream is my only option, but I imagine I could pay extra for fondant if I really wanted to. Way I see fondant= more expensive, less tasty. Seem like an easy choice!
  • Absolutely buttercream! I hate the taste of fondant. Whenever I go to a wedding and the icing is fondant, I always eat around it and just eat the cake.

    This exactly!
  • No problem - I'm pretty sure we are going with the 2nd picture too!

  • I've heard that you are supposed to peel the fondant off and not eat it.. Not sure though I'm not a baker!

Nope.  Fondant is totally edible.  It has vegetable shortening in it, which allows it to hold up better to heat or humidity than buttercream.  I don't like the taste of vegetable shortening - I replace it with butter in most every baking recipe - so I don't like fondant.  I wouldn't eat cake at a wedding that had fondant on it - I wouldn't even eat the inside because to me the flavor seeps into the cake itself.  I know I'm a bit extreme, and I wouldn't complain about it, it just isn't something I have any desire to eat.

For our wedding, we're having strawberry shortcake instead of cake, so no worries about buttercream vs. fondant, but our favors are cupcakes from Georgetown Cupcakes so those will all be delicious buttercream!

  • Buttercream/whipped cream frosting for us, because we're doing cupcakes!

If you have a good baker, he or shell should be able to make your cake look great with buttercream and fondant. I know this is weird, but what color are you going with? Because I feel like fondant colors taste really weird- that being said some cake icings taste weird too when they are colored. Love buttercream though, it has my vote :)
  • As long as it's not too hot in your venue I would do buttercream. Fondant looks pretty but I personally dont like the taste or texture. But it does hold up better. We are doing mascarpone for our tiramisu cupcakes.

I agree and I also eat around it.
  • We're going with French buttercream, but our choice was purely based on cost. Fondant is way more expensive and just wasn't worth it to us.

  • I'm actually thinking of doing a chocolate mouse cream on our cake so yes, it will be brown but I'm going for the rustic theme anyway. If we werent going to do chocolate I would go with buttercream!
