CT Hair Stylist Prices.. is this too much?

Hello everyone, this is my first time posting on The Knot! My wedding is in June 2013 and I'm looking for a hair stylist in CT.

I was a bridesmaid at a friend's weeking a week ago and I loved her hair stylist. Her quotes are $100 for the bride and $80 for the BM. I'm also going to treat my mom and FMIL to a hair style as well, and maybe even the flower girl. This comes out to $980, I believe total. I would need to put $25 as a retainer fee for all 12 people.

My friend paid the $25 fee and the bridesmaids paid the remaining $55 after the hair was finished (not including tip).

The hair stylist also charges a traveling fee of 0.65/mile and NO LESS than $55, so regardless if you live down the street from her you will be charged $55. She quoted me at $77 (her house to wedding location).

I was thinking of paying for everyone's hair, but now I'm not so sure. The prices are all adding up. What do you think?

Re: CT Hair Stylist Prices.. is this too much?

  • Its a nice gesture, but not necessary if it's not in your budget. However if you requiring people to get their hair done using this stylist it's rude to not pay for them. If hair styling is optional just let your WP know the price and let them decide
  • I agree with PP.  I wanted my bridesmaids to get their hair done at my salon, so I am paying for everyone.  The salon isn't far from my house, so we are actually going there to save on their traveling costs.

  • That sounds about the normal price for wedding day hair styling. You don't have to pay for your bridal party or mom/MIL's hair, unless you are requiring that they get it done professionally. If they want to get it done, they can pay.

Perhaps, since your wedding is still a good bit away, you can not offer to pay now, but when you get closer to the day of, if you still have money left over, you can pay for them?
  • Ditto to PP's.  That's standard pricing.  I asked my girls if they wanted to have their hair done but weren't requiring.  I told them up front that part of their gift would be the deposit if they chose to have it done.  I covered the travel cost.  I also did the same thing for makeup.  All but 2 girls chose to get makeup done so I got them a spa gift card for $25 (the same amount I was paying for the deposit for the girls getting makeup done) to the place we were going for my bachelorette.
  • The one thing that sticks out (to me) is that travel fee.  If the bill for the day is going to be almost $1,000 just for hair, and then the stylist will be tipped on top of that, the $77 for travel just seems excessive.  But that's just my opinion :)
  • I agree with PP, everything appears on par to other traveling stylists except the travel fee.  Usually they charge the standard government mileage rate which I believe is $0.55 currently (not that the $0.10 makes a difference.  And since you are over her $55 min anyways, it isn't a big deal but still weird she has the minimum.

If you are requiring your BM's to get their hair done, it is nice of you to pay.  I gave my BM's a choice, they didn't have to get their hair or make up done by the team I had come in, but if they did then they paid for their services.  I covered the tip for everyone.
  • Thank you for your feedback. I asked all my bridesmaids if they were interested in having their hair done, and they're all in. So, I paid everyone's retainer fees today ($25 x 11 includes mom and FMIL).

Looks like I have a hair stylist. Thanks again!
