Tipping?

I saw mention of tipping on the "to do list" thread and it got me thinking...

Who are you tipping at your wedding and how much (if you don't mind sharing) are you planning to give?  I am kind of clueless about this.

Re: Tipping?

  • I have no idea either...so will be watching this thread!

I'm hoping our wedding planner will be able to provide me with some sort of suggestion list. Guess I should be looking into that.

  • I will keep you posted when I hear about this from the wedding planner. I have no clue, although I think the general consensus is that you do not tip people who own their own business, but you DO tip people who are assistants (e.g. the two assistants for my wedding planner will get a tip, but probably not the wedding planner unless she goes above and beyond; the assitant for my photographer will get a tip, but not the photographer unless she goes above and beyond, etc.).

In all likelihood, I'm going to end up tipping everyone because I'll be happy and like "I LOVE YOU GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!"

  • crap...i didnt even put tipping in the budget....gah! is it really necessary??
  • I read it's only necessary as PP said if your vendors don't own their own business. My photgrapher, DJ, wedding planner, minister all own their own business and I'm not planning on tipping them. Gratuity and insane service charge of 28% total will already be added to our food/beverage bill. So I can't justify having to pay anyone any more. The only people I will plan on tipping will be my makeup and hair people as they will be tipped as if I were going to get my hair done at the salon based on price. I might throw my wedding planner a little extra tip depending on her service and going out of her way for me, but that will be decided on the day.

  • Most of my vendors own their own business. However I assume my florist/event designer will bring assistants to set up everything because there is a lot to do. Do I have to ask her how many people will be helping her so I can have tips ready to give them?
  • I'll be tipping the non-owners of the vendors I'm using

    -Makeup and hair assistants
-Limo driver - a very generous tip was included on the bill
-Maitre d - at the reception (his/her tip is separate from the gratuity)
-Servers - the gratuity our venue charges is only 12% so we'll probably put some cash in an envelope for the servors that night
-Florist  - I was going to tip my mom's friend, but if she can't do my flowers, I'll tip whoever delivers our bouquets
    -2 Photographers
    -Videographer
-DJ/Emcee - I honestly don't know if the DJ is bringing someone else.. I should probably find that out...
    -Photobooth attendant

Now I'm just not sure who we'll be trusting to be in charge of making sure everyone gets their tips.  I'll probably give my mom the $ for the makeup, hair, and flowers tips.  Everything else will either be my FI or his BM?
