Recieving line..

Did you do a recieving line, or just visit at tables? We are trying to figure out what to do- we will be present for some of cocktail hour, but we have very limited time for photos....

Re: Recieving line..

  • We are not doing a receiving line (both FI and I really dislike them). There's a jewish tradition (called yichud) where the bride and groom are secluded for ~15 min post ceremony, which is what we're doing. There's a whole history behind it, part of the tradition is the bride and groom break their fast with each other (we won't be fasting tho). Besides those 15 min we will be at the rest of the reception, and will go around to the tables to say hello to guests.

I'd go with what you want to do - if you like the idea of a receiving line, do it, if you don't, then don't. From other posts in other boards (you can search through etiquette) receiving lines tend to be about 15 min total, so take that into account. If you're pressed for time w/ photos, then maybe you should skip the line so you can get the pics. I assume you're not doing first look pics?

  • We're also spending about 10 minutes alone together immediately after the ceremony.  Neither of us are Jewish but I love the idea.  Our DOC knows we want this time alone to absorb it all and stay in the moment before the whole party starts, and she had no problem acting as a buffer and keeping people out if they are all excited to congratulate us right away.  We'll visit tables at the reception after dinner.

  • We actually did both! Loved doing the receiving line to talk to people right after the ceremony. We decided to visit tables as well, we banged out 22+ tables in less than 40 minutes! So glad we did it and we still had plenty of time to partaay!

  • We're not doing a receiving line. FI and I are going to head into the Aquarium so we can take some pictures of the whole reception layout before anyone shows up (I LOVE these pictures whenever I see them). Then we'll do table visits.

DH and I didn't do a receiving line either. We really didn't have the time by the time our ceremony was over at the church we had to go to the formal pictures. We just went around to all the tables at the reception.

  • I just had this convo with my FMIL today!  I wasn't sure if they were expected or not.  I always feel awkward when I have to go through one and I feel like I'll be uncomfortable on the other side as well so we decided to skip it and just visit tables at the reception.  I think you can do whatever you feel most comfortable doing.

Ditto... plus we did our First Look before the ceremony so we had plenty of time to go to cocktail hour, etc.
  • We are not doing a receiving line. I just recently went to a wedding where the whole wedding party and parents were in the receiving line, which I think is normal, but many of us didn't know alot of the people in the line and it was a little awkward.

  • We are not doing a receiving line because we are getting married in the same location as the reception and I don't want him to see me before the ceremony so we only have about an hour or so after the ceremony for pictures and a receiving line can take a longggg time depending on the amount of guest (we have about 200).

We will be going around tables during the reception instead.
