Addressing envelopes....

I met with the stationer this past weekend and she asked if I wanted to have them print the addresses on the outside envelopes. I never really considered doing it another way, but I suppose I could save some money if I do it myself. Is anyone addressing their own invitations? If so, are you using labels? I want the invitations to look formal and professional, but I'm wondering if there is a way that I could address my own.. TIA!

I hired a calligrapher for my invitations and she did a fantastic job and was about .80 cents per envelope.  Let me know if you are interested in using her services and I can give you her contact info!

I just printed mine on clear labels in a caligraphy font and I think they still looked very nice.  You can also print directly on the envelopes, but you have to be careful with the material of your envelopes if they will smudge easily.  I was going to print directly on the envelopes, but i did not have many extra to play around with so went the safe route by doing labels.  

I think caligraphy is nice, but .80 per envelope, that is pretty much what I paid per invite, didn't want the extra cost.

I was having the same dilemma. I decided that once people open the invitation, the envelope is thrown right away. I was going to hire a calligrapher but decided to save the money. I bought calligraphy pens at AC Moore and am going to address them myself. I have very neat handwriting and to me, it's worth the extra savings!!

I'm planning on printing addresses onto my envelopes. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm hoping it works!

Another idea is print on the envelopes in a light gray and then write over them with a caligraphy pen, so it looks like it is hand written but you are tracing it.

I had my aunt address them, she has nice hand writting so she did it for free. Honestly, I think that you can do whatever you want to do- I never judge a wedding by the invitation.

I am doing clear labels, my hard writing it not good at all! I have used them already for the STDs and they looked absolutely fine!

I did this! I wanted them in a nice fancy script font so I used our home printer & it worked fine. It was a HUGE PITA to be honest, mainly because of the positioning (order extra envelopes) but overall they looked awesome!!!

This! I went relatively cheap with the invitations through VistaPrint.. and I agree with another PP that I personally never judge a wedding by the invitation and especially not the envelope/ address.

I thought printing envelopes or using labels was a BIG etiquette no-no, which I didn't realize until reading the etiquette boards on here. If nobody cares, I'm doing it too! My MOH handwrote all the STDs (thank you!!) but I don't want to put anyone through that again!

I'd avoid labels. They really are an etiquette no no and they just don't look great on the invitation. Hand addressed is best or print directly on with the computer. A friend gave me a calligraphy kit. I used it to teach myself a basic font and addressed our invitations myself. They looked great.

I agree, something about labels turns me off. Don't get me wrong, I used them for my STD, and I have received wedding invitations with labels in the past, and I have never thought to myself "oh what a crappy invitation!" But I guess when it's your own wedding, you really raise the bar for yourself. My mom did calligraphy years ago, and I'm wondering if she would be able to pick it up again (and if she would be willing to do calligraphy on 100 invitations!). But even if she wouldn't, I would gladly pay the .80 per envelope for calligraphy, even if it's just for my own peace of mind!

Yes definitely!  Her name is Carmela and she lives in New Jersey, but it wasnt a problem at all.  I just mailed her all my envelopes and she will mail them back to you once she completes them.  She was very fast and her rates are great.  My envelopes came out beautifully and I got a ton of compliments on them.  She even used white ink on black envelopes for me!

why are labels and handwriting a big etiquette no-no?  IMO, no one will be offended if there is a label or plain script and isn't that what etiquette is supposed to be there for.

That's not the point of etiquette in this situation.

Your wedding invitation is the first thing that your guests see regarding your wedding if you did not send an STD.  Even if you did, it's the first glimpse of your wedding itself and not anything that's a 'pre' event.

The point of etiquette is to treat others well and the point of the invitation is to make your guests feel personally welcomed.  A mass-mailed pre-printed label that is slapped on the invitation is not personal.  It turns the very personal event of the exchange of vows and celebration for your invited guests into something addressed the same way as market research. 

That's why labels are such an etiquette no no and if possible, the invitations should be addressed by hand in the bride's or hosts' best handwriting.
