XP - name changing

Hey girls - my wedding was May 22nd and we're just back from our 2-week HM and back to work today.

So...on to the name change thing.  I'm printing off forms now. You start with Social Security office, right? And bring your marriage license and anything else I need to know?

And then the DMV with their name change form to get a new license....

I guess everything else follows suit after that?  What do you do for your mortgage / bank accounts / credit cards, everything else? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

If you're close, I recommend going to the Middletown offices. I was in and out of BOTH SS and DMV in a TOTAL of 20 minutes.

I brought my marriage license to SS, they did everything electronically, and they printed it out for me to sign...then I took my reciept and marriage license to DMV, they just looked at my marriage license, and had me fill something out quick, and that was it.

I actually still haven't changed my name on my loans yet...but they have directions on the website...banks just needed my new license and marriage license.

Thanks - I'm not too far from Middletown (in Newington) so that could be a possibilty. Good to know they were fast.

start with social security and once you have that done, it really doesn't matter what order you do the rest in.  i've done pretty much everything EXCEPT my drivers license LOL.  i'm going to try to get there this week, but we'll see

just remember to bring your actual certified marriage license with you for whatever you change in person.  for everyone else (student loans, credit cards, insurance companies, etc), you can usually write them a letter and send a copy of your marriage license with it.  

certain places, like Paypal, for some reason want a copy of your new drivers license to change your name.  they would not accept a copy of my marriage license alone as proof.

also, something to keep in mind (and the reason i havent changed my drivers license yet).  if you write "see ID" on any of your credit cards (i do this with all of mine) and you actually get asked for ID, it isnt going to fly if your names don't match!  this is why i chose to switch my debit/credit cards BEFORE i did my drivers license....

Wow - thanks for all the advice / details!  Very helpful :-)

Crushme - HM was awesome!!! We did a week in Santorini, Greece with one night in Athens (we got to see the Acropolis while there) and then a week in Rome where we saw a LOT of sites. It was pretty incredible - I've never done a long vacation like that before and it was a great mix of relaxation and cultural / sight-seeing. It was really great.   Back to real life now

Your HM sounds amazing! I'm glad you guys had such a great time!

That's what I'm afraid of... I've been hyping up the wedding and HM for a year and a half now and when it's finally all come and gone, I'm worried about coming back to work.. blah.

I went to SS in Ansonia and it took about 5 minutes it was quick and easy DMV was terrible, but I went to Hamden and I was there about 2 hours but it was the only one I could do because of work at the time.

OK, was in and out of SS office in East Hartford in like 5 minutes : painless.

I'm going to the Wethersfield DMV so I am praying that it is just as easy but it IS the DMV so who knows....   ** fingers crossed!! **
