Roatan

(XP from Nest travel board)

H and I decided on Roatan for our 'anniversary' trip in September (our anniversary is actually in November, but that's the rainiest month there, so we've decided to go a little earlier and then just to a weekend getaway for our actual anniversary).

We're really excited because I've heard the diving there is excellent, and since we weren't able to dive on our last two vacations (H had a dislocated shoulder for our HM, and then our Kauai trip got rained out), we're looking to make up for it here.

Although we want to do a lot of diving, I want to do a lot of relaxing and maybe a few other land activities there too.  So my question is, has anyone been to Roatan?  Any recommendations for restaurants, activities, etc?  We'll be on the West End.

I've never been there, but Roatan is one of the stops on our HM cruise (in November, so our fingers are crossed for good weather!).  We did some research and talked to friends who had been there and we decided to book an excursion to Gumbalimba Park.  I'm not sure if it would be something you're into, but we thought it would be fun.  Unfortunately, we only have one day to spend there, so we wanted to do something that had several options.  Gumbalimba has park tours, ziplining, kayaking, snorkeling, etc.  Here's a link:http://www.gumbalimbapark.com/index.html.

  • Thanks!  That's one of the places I've heard good things about, so I think we'll check it out.  We looked at weather from last November and it didn't appear to rain too much, though statistically it's their wettest month.  But we just went to Kauai in March and it rained almost every day, so we definitely wanted to avoid that this time, which is why we are going a little earlier.  Here's to hoping you have a beautiful day while you stop there!

  • I just went there in April and it was beautiful. It was a stop on our tour and we would love to go back. West beach was amazing but crowded. Halfmoon bay was quiet and I would stay at one of the bayfront accommodations. The snorkeling was great. It's a really small island so you can easily get to other dive locations. I would find a "home base" and then explore sites you can visit for the day.
    Enjoy...we did!

  • We stopped in Roatan on our cruise last year and loved it. We went on the zip lining and Gumbalimba Park tour which was amazing!
