Driving distance from WV?

The soon-to-be hubby and I are beginning the planning process but can't decide where to go on our honeymoon (May 2013).  We're leaning toward somewhere beachy because the hubby has never been to the ocean and we thought it would be fun to visit on our honeymoon... but we're not ruling out other options.  We initally thought of St. Augustine, FL because it has a great mix of beaches, historial sites, and outdoor adventure but as long as it's somewhere laid-back and affordable, we'll look into it.  We're not into partying so we definitely don't want anything with a spring break feel either.  And one of the most important things is the location - it needs to be within driving distance of West Virginia - no more than 10 - 12 hours, max.  Any suggestions? :)

  • Hilton Head, SC has a good mix of everything you're looking for as does Charleston, SC.
  • I'd recommend the Outer Banks in NC. It's about a 7 hour drive from where I live in MD, so even less for you. You can rent a home for the week, it's not crowded at all, it's got a lot of history with light houses, museums etc. I love it down there!

  • Savannah, GA!

Historical City (not as old as St augustine, but 1730s I think?), great food, great hotels and a beach/island about 20 min away.

Plus, it's much less commercial than hilton head!
  • Another Charleston, SC vote.

  • I've heard great things about Savannah, but loved Charleston. TONS of history, both Revolutionary War and Civil War, every restaurant is fabulous.

I think you'll find the east coast less humid and a bit cooler than Florida in May.
  • Thanks for the ideas so far!  I'm intrigued by Charleston, SC...

I absolutely loved camping at St. Joseph Peninsula State Park in Port St Joe, FL (about an hour down the Gulf Coast from Panama City Beach).  FI and went there on our first trip together after only dating about 2 months.  The park is very secluded from cities and it gave us time to relax.  The beach is walking distance (1/4 mile) from the campsites.  There was a cute ice cream shop and a gas station where you could buy groceries and that was really it for about 10-15 miles.

  • I'll vote for Savannah. Counting stops, it took 10 hours from Charleston, WV. Not too bad of a drive and the city was lovely.

We also considered Charleston, SC, Virginia, the Poconos, the Outer Banks, and Chicago.

P.S. If you do choose Savannah, ignore the people who say you HAVE to eat at Paula Dean's. We did and it was good, but not really worth the money, in my opinion.

  • Savannah!  Or Charleston.  We went to Savannah last summer and I'm in love!  We stayed at the Hamilton Turner Inn, a bit pricey but amazing!!  We're going to Charleston for our HM this summer, no experience there yet but very excited about it.  As a PP mentioned, don't eat at Paula Dean's.  We never did, but every local we talked to said it's not worth the wait/money/time, and it's all heavy food...in the Savannah summer heat, that's the LAST thing I wanted.  Tybee Island is a short distance away for beach excurrsions.  My sister went to Savannah for the first half of her HM then went to Tybee the second half, just a thought. Smile  I hope wherever you go, you have fun and enjoy yourselves!
