Passports

Hi,
I tried doing a search on our board about passports but had no luck finding an answer. Does anyone know how long is the application process for a passport?
I know I can find the applications at the post office which I'm hoping to get soon.

thanks,
pescadita

You can actually go online for the form
    http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html

It's fillable which makes it easier and cleaner to submit.  I think it depends if you are applying for your first passport or renewing.  I just renewed mine and it took a couple weeks to get a new one in the mail, which I was surprised at how quickly it arrived.  Normally it can take a couple months.

Make sure you also go to the post office with two forms of identification and two passport photos (you can get a CVS usually).

When I got my passport a few years ago, you could pay an extra amount of $ (I think $20?  I forget, don't quote me on it) to get it expedited and it will come in about 2 weeks.  Otherwise I think it take a couple of months for it to come it and the fee is about $150 (again, don't quote me, that's ABOUT what it was I don't remember specifically)

You can also get your pictures done at CVS or other places for cheaper, if you get them done at the Post Office it's a little more expensive.

    GL!

It depends on the time of year you are applying for it too. FI and I applied at the beginning of Janaury for ours and got them by mid-February. I've had friends that have applied in the summer and waited a few months before getting theirs. It was about $150 for the passport and $80 for the passport card which you can use for cruises but not if you are flying into another country. HTH!

Thank you for all of the helpful info!
I need to renew mine and FI needs to get a new one. I didn't realize we were going to need one when traveling to the Carribean. We just started looking into our hooneymoon and read that a passport is needed.  Another thing to add to my To-Do list!

That's what I did. It was a while ago though. FI just applied for his. Not sure how long it takes, but we're not in a rush as he doesn't need it until May.

I needed a passport 2 years ago and applied really early thinking it would take a few months.  I arrived within 3 weeks!  It really depends where in the state you live.  There is a local processing center in Norwalk, and I know that one has a quick turnover rate.
