Honeymoon ideas - Aug/Sept- not too hot or humid

The FI and I have different tastes when it comes to travel. I like historic/cultural places and cool weather and he likes warm beaches. The middle ground for us is someplace that's got beaches, but isn't super hot or humid and has some interesting natural areas or historic places to visit. We'd have a week and right now planning honeymoon in Aug/Sept. We're in Chicago burbs. We jhaven't set a budget yet, but someplace in the continental U.S., since we only have one week.

Suggestions anyone?

  • Oregon?  Northern California?  The Oregon coastline is to die for, and there are some awesome beaches, but there is so much other stuff to do, and the weather, while it might be rainy some of the days, should be a good temp and not too humid, especially compared to the Chicago area.  If it gets too warm one day, you'd be a short drive from some cool mountain areas where it would be cooler.  There are tons of great day trips, depending on what part of the state you'd be in--Willamette or Mt. Hood National Forests, Crater Lake, wineries, waterfalls, etc.

  • Congrats on finding the right guy at 47.............I found mine at 52, LOL!

We spent 2 weeks in California the middle of September last year on our HM. It was lovely! We flew into San Fran, then drove down the coast on the Pacific Coast Hwy (Hwy 1) all the way to Coronado Bay near San Diego. In a rented convertible! It was our dream "baby boomer" HM.

The coast of California, regardless of where you go, will not be too hot or humid.

I can also personally recommend the following:

East Coast of US: I've been to Maine, NH, VT, MA, CT, RI, NJ, NY, SC, DC, FL.

The east coast can be muggy depending on the weather for any given year. Not sure what you consider "too hot", but the farther south you go it will get warmer. I took my kids on a trip about 6 years ago of the east coast, flew into NJ, rented a car and drove all the way up to Maine (10 hrs), then worked our way back down the coast. This was around the 4th of July and the beaches in Maine were warm, water a bit cold. It's warmer in August more years.

If you want all the requirements of historic sites, beaches, and natural beauty, I'd say your best bet would be Massachusetts, or a combination stay/drive vacation that includes a flight into Boston, a couple of days there to see historic sites, drive down the coast, maybe spend a couple of days on the seashore in RI or NJ, then drive down to DC and fly home from there. As a fellow Midwesterner, a trip to DC is something many don't do, but so much is FREE, and it's really a trip I highly recommend.

We happen to LOVE road trips, seeing more than just one area, and the rental of a convertible for our HM was a must. Mutli-city flights are generally not that much more than roundtrip flights in my experience. You can see more places, and return the car at the airport of your final destination.

Charleston SC may be muggy in August/September, not sure. But it has a LOT of history, both Revolutionary War and Civil War, has charming restaurants, many like 4 star restaurants, and there are beachy/spa type hotels on Kiawah (sp?) Island. We were there a year ago, and it was in the 60's in January. Not beachy, but as a northerner I was amazed the petunias were still blooming in January, LOL.

Also: If you guys are sports fans, I'd highly recommend checking the schedule for your favorite baseball team. This is what we did, we delayed our HM until a couple of weeks after our wedding so we could see the Tigers play in Oakland. LIttle did we know we'd see them clinch the division title while there. We stayed at the same hotel they did for 4 nights, saw them all the time walking around. It was a great trip for us baseball geeks. There's an easy way to find out where your favorite team stays when on the road.

If you want any more info on any of the above, just send me a private message.
  • I second (or third) Northern Cali. We are going there this July for our 1 year wedding anniversary. I have not been there before, but H has and I have done a lot of research. The Carmel/Montery/Big Sur area looks absolutely stunning! You could do San Fran for the art/historical/cultural aspects you wanted and even go up to wine country!

It will definitely not be humid; it'll probably be in the 60s or 50s maybe even in Aug. I think Sept-Oct gets a little warmer.

I have heard there are some beaches in Carmel/Monterey that are safe for swimming but the water is cold. You could always drive down the PCH though and visit some of the central/southern California cities where it would be more "beach weather."

GL planning your trip, wherever you go!

  • I second Charleston, SC. Yes, it will be hot but you can go to Isle of Palms beach, which is super nice. Also there are a ton of historical places to visit, like Ft. Sumpter. Good luck and have fun wherever you decide!
