reception dress are you doing this?

I like the idea of a reception dress. I love the dress I will be wearing but it is a ball gown and would like to be able to dance and get around easily. My mother is buying my wedding dress and think she might be hurt if I only wearing for ceremony and pictures.

. For the reception dress I am thinking this:

What are your thoughts on reception dresses? Are you doing one? I dont want to blend in and I want to stand out during my reception but also want to be comfortable. its also such a shame to spend over 1000 on a dress you wear for an hour tops

Re: reception dress are you doing this?

  • I loved my gown, and didn't want to ever take it off, so I wore it all night! It was very large and had lots of layers, but I didn't really have a problem dancing in it.

If you're worried about your mom's feelings, you should talk to her about a reception dress and what she thinks of the idea. Also consider the fact that you'll have to take the time to go to a private room, have someone undo your dress, take it off, and put the second dress on- which takes valuable time you could be spending with your husband and/or your guests.
  • I recently bought a short, ivory dress with the intention of possibly wearing it during my reception. We are getting married on May 25 and it may be 50 degrees or it may be 90. I also have a ball gown and am worried if the temps are high, I will over heat. So, I bought a dress I may change into if I am sweating like crazy. It was only $150 from the BCBG outlet in clinton, but I feel better knowing IF I am too hot, I CAN change. I probably won't, especially because most women say the same thing mentioned in the previous post... they love their dress and they don't want to take it off If you can afford it, I say buy an inexpensive dress that you like and keep it on hand that day.

All of that being said, I love the dress I bought so much, I am thinking about wearing it to my rehersal. If I get hot, then I will recycle the dress on my wedding. Who cares? Who will know? Only my bridal party and close family, and I know they will not care.

Sorry this is so long! Good luck!
  • I am not getting a different dress for the reception.  I feel the same way as MoonlightSilver.  I love my dress so much and wouldn't want to change out of it.

That being said, if you really want a reception dress ask your mother what she thinks.

I felt like my wedding day was the only day I'd get to wear a dress like the one I chose so why try to change it?  It wasn't going to be worn again either.  I wore the my dress until we were back at the hotel.

I went to one wedding recently where the bride changed into a long reception dress.  In this case, they had a fairly formal wedding and she simply changed out of a princess gown into a mermaid gown with no train for dancing.    If you change into something of a different length it might be a different formality of the entire event.

As long as your venue is air conditioned you should be somewhat cool for the reception.  If you get hot, take breaks from dancing to mingle and talk to your guests.

ETA: The other option is to use that dress as a 'send off' dress.  Wait until the end of the event and change into it if you want a choreographed send off with guests.  Then make sure you and DH have at least one formal dinner on the HM and you can wear it again!
  • I'm keeping mine on all night, heck I might even wear it on the plane to my honeymoon :-) wouldn't that be a sight haha

Hey, if you don't take up a ton of space while doing it you might get some freebies your way!
  • I'm hoping to wear my dress the entire night.  Like PP, I know I spent a large chunk of change on something I'm only going to wear once.  That being said, my wedding is in August in an unairconditioned barn.  The reception needs to end by 10 pm and at that point we are having the after party at a restaurant/bar across the street.  I will have a shorter dress with me to change into and depending on the weather might have to change into it during the reception.

I think it's all about doing whatever makes you feel the most comfortable on your wedding day!

  • That is a really cute dress.

I've been to a few weddings where the bride wears a different dress to the reception. I didn't love it...nothing really set them apart from regular guests, other than the fact that she was wearing white. But I would consider it if I found a really cute one, and the one you're looking at is great!
