Cake Opinions

My fiancee thinks it is weird to have a chocolate cake at our June wedding, but he really wants chocolate cake with peanut butter filling. He's worried about what guests will think when they have a slice of chocolate cake placed in front of them, instead of the "typical" white wedding cake. (The outside would be white buttercream, so the cake would be frosted in white and no one would even know it's chocolate until it is cut). I'm trying to get some opinions to convince him that chocolate/peanut butter cake isn't THAT weird at a wedding, and he should have whatever cake flavor he wants. Thoughts???

Re: Cake Opinions

  • We are doing a marble cake with a cream/strawberry filling. Its YOUR wedding who cares what color the cake is - if it tastes good do it! Just beware of those guests that may have peanut allergies with the peanut butter filling!

  • What about having two different layers - one white traditional and one chocolate peanut butter?

Just a thought, but peanut butter is often a risky ingredient in large groups because of nut allergies.  But maybe I'm super sensitive to that because I have a cousin who has an allergy.

  • I didn't think about the peanut butter allergy thing but I definitely wouldn't worry about not being traditional.  We had two differnt kinds of layers- a chocolate with raspberry mousse and a vanilla with white chocolate mousse. I would go with whatever makes you happy.  I wouldn't think chocolate cake was weird at all.
  • Agreed. I don't think it's weird at all. Personally, we're doing different flavors for each of the 3 tiers: chocolate w/ raspberry mousse, chocolate w/ chocolate mousse & white with strawberry mousse. Maybe do something like some of the PPs said (especially with the whole allergy thing, which I didn't think of at first) and do half PB & chocolate, the other half white. That way people can choose between traditional & delicious :) haha

  • I agree with PP's.  Not weird at al!  We're also doing  two chocolate layers and one white.  I would ask your baker about the allergy thing.  I know at the school I work at, most peanut allergy kids can't have anything that was made in peanut facilities either, so even having it on one layer might affect all 3 in term of what people can eat.  That said, I can name the people in my wedding who have peanut allergies, and I'd probably just provide a little alternate for them if I was doing with peanut butter/chocolate.
  • Agreed with pp's. And PB sounds delish!!!!
  • It is not weird and Im curious to know why he would think it is weird. You can do a wedding cake in so many flavors! If your future hubby is worried about it being weird then as a PP has said to a different layer or the cake in that  for you and him and do a second flavor for your guests. we are doing our top teir as a strawberry shortcake and the other two tiers as marble with strawberry mouse. Its all about the two of you so don't go trying to impress anyone but yourselves. besides alot of people might be excited to have something a little different on a wedding day versus the plain stuff.

  • Thanks ladies! I thought about the peanut allergy thing too....I know for a fact that no one in our immediate families/circle of friends has a peanut allergy, but with 200 guests, I'm sure there could be someone out there who has a peanut allergy that we don't know about. I was under the impression that people with nut allergies tend to avoid baked goods unless they know that they were baked in a nut-free facility. Is it true that many baked goods have "traces of nuts" in them because they are prepared and baked in the same areas where nuts would be? I figured that someone who has a nut allergy wouldn't want to risk eating our cake anyways, even if it wasn't PB cake...because they can't be sure that it's totally safe. Am I wrong?

  • I think it sounds delicious! Any wedding that I've been to recently has had marble cake and I think that chocolate is more popular that vanilla anyways so it doesn't sound weird!

  • I've seen plenty of chocolate wedding cakes! I doubt any guest with an allergy would eat cake anyway because you don't know if there was cross contimination back at the bakery.
  • Agree with PP- not weird at all!
  • Definitely sounds yummay!! I would worry about alergies def but I would also change the flavors on the layers to avoid that problem!
