Riviera Maya -vs- St. Lucia

This is my 1st forum post, so I hope it works & I hope I get lots of feedback! I am so torn on where to go on a honeymoon?! My fiance's only request is that there is blue water - My request is that it is extremely romantic :)

We are looking for - Affordable - Romantic - Luxurious

What's your vote?            St. Lucia or Riviera Maya

Re: Riviera Maya -vs- St. Lucia

  • Riviera Maya will be more affordable than St. Lucia. Flights to St. Lucia are pricey.

We got married in St. Lucia, but have been to Riviera Maya. St. Lucia is much, much more beautiful

...but, yes, more expensive. Here's a picture I took of one of the Piton Mountians. (St. Lucia)
  • We just booked The Valentin Imperial Maya in RM and we're so excited!! It was very affordable compared to others and the reviews on tripadvisor are awesome. It's a large resort with lots of pathways for "romantic walks" to get to where you're going. There's even little animals that run around the pathways. It has two sections of the pool, one is louder for more activites and action. The other is calm. It also has a lazy river. The beach looks fantastic!

That's unfortunately you had a bad incident; but it was probably due to one meal you ate or drinking unproperly treated water.  I wouldn't shy away from an entire country because of that.

OP- Have you looked into logistics of flights?  We originally were going to do a Sandals in St Lucia but then when we went to book we realized that on our dates, out of O'Hare, we'd have to have an overnight in Miami when trying to get to St. Lucia....that totally changed our plans and we did a 2.5hr direct flight to Riveria Maya/Cancun instead

OP - Please don't let this comment deter you from Riviera Maya. Many resorts provide bottled water in your rooms, by the pools, etc. I've been to Mexico a number of times and have never gotten sick.

LOL i've been every december for the last 9 years. resorts filter their water for drinks, cooking purposes. you got sick, more than likely, from eating food you weren't used to or a stomach bug unrelated to the water/food.

anyway-i've been to both areas. i find the water to be bluer in RM but St L has that gorgeous piton rugged beauty. they're similar with some excursions like ziplining and jungle terrain. as far as where you'd stay that would depend on your budget. have you done any research into either about cost? and as for it being extremely romantic-you make that happen anywhere :)

  • I'm also interested in going to the riviera maya for my honeymoon. Those of you who have been there, can you suggest some nice & affordable resorts to stay at. Thanks!
