sneaking alcohol onto a cruise

I just saw a post where someone said they had booze confiscated when getting on a cruise. We're sailing on RC Mariner of the Seas to Mexico.

Has anyone tried using shampoo bottles, bladders or rum runner type contraptions? We have a hiking bladder that's kind of kidney shaped. I'm wondering if they would catch it. It's thick leather so i'm not sure how that would play out with the x-ray machine. I'm also thinking a large listerine bottle might be worth a try.
I heard RC is harder to sneak alcohol onto, but i have no idea if that's true or not. Can anyone speak from experience? Thanks!
We're just two lost souls swimmin' in a fish bowl, year after year

Re: sneaking alcohol onto a cruise

  • i had the "original" flavor listerine bottle emptied out (bc its sort of a brownish color) and put rum in there. it was the jumbo bottle and i didnt have any problems. also i know some cruiselines allow you to have water or soda with u, we put a handle of vodka in sprite bottles. however, i have heard that RC has a zero tolerance policy now- if you're caught you're not allowed to board and you forfeit any refund so I would really think hard about whether its worth it. FWIW, I'm sure it doesnt happen often, but my neighbor's friend was caught trying to sneak alcohol onto a RC ship last summer and lost his money.

  • There is a clear listerine and my ex husband snuck clear liquor on... he even kept the plastic seal whole somehow and just emptied the bottle and replaced it with I think clear rum... they have punch avail all the time and the rum with the punch wasnt a bad little drink :)
  • We brought on a twelve pack of bottled water and had them filled with rum...they had no idea :)

  • Why do you need to sneak it on?  Do they not have booze on the boat?

  • lol Keisha you are right...it is not only tacky, but what are you guys alcoholics?? They have tons of different drink options on the cruise ships.  You can also do their wine program which is cheaper and get a bottle every night OR do their drink of the day which is usually on sale.   I don't get it.
  • other ideas:

    eyemakeup remover bottles
    the clinique toners

  • so you are going to mix your own drinks in your room and drink there or possible carry it and slip it in your drink so you can save a few bucks.  Maybe you should just bring cough syrup...or posibly rubbing alcohol.  OR maybe you bring the alcohol but get kicked off if they are on to you.  Why risk it???

  • It never even occurred to me to sneak alcohol onto a cruise, they have plenty of it on board and make some pretty fantastic concoctions! Yes, you have to pay for your drinks, but heck you're on vacation, a nice drink with an umbrella in it by the pool isn't something to cheap out on. Plus you can purchase alcohol for cheap in the ports because it's duty free, I've heard that you're supposed to have it stored below and you can't get it until you return to go home, but FI and I walked right back on to the ship on our last cruise with a big bottle of rum and no one said a thing to us.

  • Seriouslyyy? Seriously! Wow. I think that is SO TACKY. Personally, I'd be afraid to drink something out of a bottle that had something like eyemakeup remover in it..or whatever... once upon a time. gross.

i'm a senior in college, and things like "sneaking a handle of vodka into sprite" or WHATEVER is so childish!

it is  your honeymoon! make a drinking budget before you leave, take advantage of things like free wine tastings, etc. and enjoy your honeymoon without risking getting sick or getting caught and being refused to board. this is your honeymoon, and you only do it once, you don't want the fear or getting caught. not worth it in my opinion.
  • please!  although i would never sneak booze onto a ship (would never take cruise in general, and sneaking it onto a ship with the possibility of being kicked off would alone scare the pants off of me and my fiance) it is a recession and not all people can afford a $5000, $3000, or even $2000 honeymoon.  booze is not included on a cruise, and if you want booze, you either have to pay for it (an additional large expence) or sneak it on.  if you are a little adventurous, then i say, sneak it on!  who cares what anyone else says!
  • We use cruising as our 'budget' vacations and in keeping with that we keep our drink purchases to a minimum.  We bring the 1 bottle of wine per person that is allowed (we have never been charged the corkage fee in the dining room and our waiter receives a nice thank you for that in his tip) and then only purchase drinks that fit within what we are willing to spend.

disagree with this post completely. if the recession has hit someone THAT BADLY why risk the $5000/3000/2000 honeymoon to bring BOOZE onto the ship? think about it.

My friends and I took a 3-day cruise to Ensenada right after finishing the Bar exam.  I had no idea we could be kicked off if they caught us with alcohol!  I've never been on a cruise before.

Anyway, we went on this trip (20+ of us) as just a fun way to all hang out and celebrate the end of all that studying and stress, so yes, we did party it up for those 3 days.  At this point in our lives, we hadn't started working yet, so the prospect of buying mixed drinks on the cruise was not appealing.  Even with doing this, I still spent about $100 when we actually went to the bar on the boat.

I bought a Nalgene flask (who knew they made this kind of thing?) at REI and brought it on board, filled with vodka.  I didn't have any problems getting it on, it was just in my suitcase.

For a honeymoon, though, I don't really understand this.  Is the point to be able to get wasted, or save money?  If it's true that you could be not allowed to board if they catch you, that would deter me.

first of all, i am not registering for a honeymoon.  already booked and paid for mine and have no intention of doing a registry.  do not assume anything about my honeymoon or the other girls on here.  just because i support the girls who are doing a registry does not mean i am doing one as well.

second, i am not saying it is 100% ok, but i am saying if she wants to do it, she should just do it. we are probably not going to sway her decision, as she did not come on here posting "is this tacky?" she just asked how can i do it?

i agree with jessnlane--regardless of what kind of honeymoon you take you should allocate a certain amount of money for what is important to you.  if that is booze, then save up for it, just like an excursion.

LOL many lines allow you to bring it on to begin with. i suggest you check the cruise line's website.
also-and this is JMO-but if you have to sneak a water bottle full of rum on to avoid paying for 4 drinks you've probably got some big money issues and shouldn't be taking a HM to begin with.

  • I guess I'm trashy then :-)

  • I don't think its trashy.  It's a good way to save some money to be able to do other things like excursions and such.  Dirnks on cruises can get expensive, and if bringing some liquor with you will help to save then more power to you.  The listerine bottle idea is a good one.  Good luck and try not to get caught!!

To compare.. 7 night cruise where we didn't bring any of our own booze... we spent a little more than $1300 just on booze.  7 night cruise where we did bring some of our own booze... we spent like $500 on booze.  When I am on vacation I don't want to have to think about where we are as far a budget goes when I order a drink or a bottle of wine.

  • I would check with the cruise line. I use to work for Holland America ( a few years ago) and we allowed you to take a certain amount of alcohol with you as well as soda and what not. Remember you carry your own luggage (at least with HA), so if you wanted to deal with soda and alcohol then so be it.

I would just call the cruise line and say you had a general question about a trip that is booked to ----- and is it ok if you brought your own alcohol.

Also check the drink packages. If you do not drink much they may have a small package for $100 that may fit you and your FI's taste. Remember you also pay for soda and in some cases coffee, so plan accordingly.

    Megan =)
