construction at wedding site!

I signed a contract at a hotel resort in sedona Arizona for my desitnation wedding reception. They didn't tell me they were doing construction that was supposed to be done one month before my wedding date. Constuction is behind and now it wont be done until after my wedding!!!! Now all of my guests have already booked rooms there and gotten an e-mail alerting them to the fact is being worked on. I know a lot of this is beyond the control of the hotel and DOC but I am really upset! I feel like I am stuck now because I am under contract and dont have enough time to book at another venue. I feel like they lied by omition and I might have kept looking for another venue had I known ahead of time.
Any words of understanding or advice would be appreciated.

Re: construction at wedding site!

  • Unfortunately that's the way construction is..you can plan to meet a deadline but anything can happen to slow it down. I wouldn't say the venue lied to you, as they were probably told the construction would be done at the time they told you. Does this construction mean your guests have no rooms to sleep in, or just that there will be construction going on while they're there? If its just a matter of some construction going on, you can still make it work. Assuming they aren't renovating the room/area you plan to have your ceremony reception in, then it's not really a big deal. I would stick with the venue because it would be nearly impossible to find another one on this short notice. Try talking to them, maybe they would be willing to renegotiate the price due to the minor inconvenience.

  • NO WAY!!! That happened to me and my fiance! We booked our venue over a year ago and then found out in December that the entire area surrounding our beautiful outdoor wedding was completely under construction (even the river our venue looked over was dug up!), you could not even get to our venue! Luckily it has gotten better over the past few months and we can get to the venue, even though the whole back side is still a completely under construction and a hot mess. We too felt very decieved and lied to, but we stood our ground with the venue to cut us some breaks on things and are going to poke fun at it a bit. We are having milk and cookies as our favor and our cookies will be construction equipment shapes.
How much does the construction effect your venue? Can you get your venue to comp some additional plants, fabric, etc to help draw your eye away from the venue?

I know how much this hurts and how it does seem that your wedding day is going to be comepletely changed, but I have found that I had to just let it go and focus on other thigns with my wedding. My fiance said that if it really turns out to be a disaster we will renew our vows there for our 10 or 20 yr. anniversary. I hope this helps. Best of luck!

That does actually help. The people who booked rooms there can still get to their rooms but the view they are paying for will be starting right at the construction (rip off!).They told me it would be done a month ago and the pictures they sent me today look as if nothing has happened for a month. Some of my family are going to stay there an extra day so they can hang out by the pool which will be closed and they will have to walk to a neighboring resort if they want to swim.
It won't effect the reception too much in that the room itself is fine. The balcony will be overlooking the constuction. If I think it looks awful then I will have them change our reception room to another one on site. It will not have a view but if it makes me feel better I can make it happen. I am still going to have my reception there but it doesn't change the fact that I am upset about the fact they knew they were going to be doing construction and neglected to tell me before I signed my life away with them. ARGH! Yell

P.S. sounds like you have a good attitude about your ceremony site. I hope it all goes well and the guests can laugh at the situation with you. Let me know how it turns out!

  • The Amara resort and spa. I'm sure you would know if it was them! You would have gotten the email. Where are you having yours?
