Honeymoon luggage.. what to buy?!

Hey ladies!
I browsed a few other forums trying to find answers before I started my own post. My fiance and I are going a destination weddingmoon in Nassau.  We've never had to fly (we normally drive within the US), so we don't have any luggage.  I've looked on amazon, overstock, Macys, Kohl's.. I can't seem to find a GREAT luggage set that has good reviews about surviving airport baggage handling. We're going to be there for 14 days, so I need a few good sized uprights (30,28,24,20) kind of deal. Not really overly concerned with price because we will be traveling on upcoming anniversaries more.

Any advice or suggestions would be great!
Natalie

Re: Honeymoon luggage.. what to buy?!

  • I would check TJ Maxx or Marshall's for luggage...same brands at much better prices!
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • I recommend Samsonite-the pieces I have had for 5+ years have never broken. And you can find them on sale at TJ Maxx, outlets, etc.

If money is truly no concern, get TUMI. They last FOREVER and they have a good repair/replace program.

Anything I have EVER bought from Kohls has broken within a year, especially the straps on any bags that you carry.

  • I use Rimowa luggage- Salsa Air. It's expensive (between $500-$600/bag), but I LOVE it!!! I travel frequently for business, as well as leisure, so it was important to me to get bags that are light and durable. I believe the sizes I bought were the 24" and 26". I sometimes think I should have gotten the 29" for the longer vacations, but we also have a carry-on sized Samsonite upright that has stayed in good shape since 2004. We're also having a weddingmoon in Australia and have some pretty tight luggage restrictions for the islands, so Rimowa is perfect for it since the bags are so super light. HTH!

  • I love Travelpro and Victorinox.  We also have a bunch of Delsay featherweight luggage, which we have taken all over the world and has survived rough handling in South American and the South Pacific and Southeast Asia.

I have found amazing luggage deals at Ross and TJ Maxx, but that doesn't work as well if you want a truly matching set.
  • We bought a 4 piece set at Kohls on sale for $60.00 it has two suitcases with wheels, a duffel bag with wheels and a cosmetic bag! We've had it for three years and have taken it on two road trips and on our HM to Jamaica and its been perfect!
  • I have an excellent rolly bag from Eddie Bauer.

I've flown all my life and only had my bag broken once.  It was an older bag and totally asking for it.
  • We just upgraded ours to the Travelpro Crew collection at Macys.  It has great reviews, and we absolutely love ours.  I'm guessing you can find it cheaper on Amazon, we just happened upon a great sale at Macys.  Our previous luggage was Samsonite, and it also lasted forever- many vacations, including a couple trips to Europe.  HTH!

  • I agree with checking out places like TJMAxx and Marshall's. I bought a Liz Claiborne set a few years ago before I took a trip to China. They are really good quality and for a much better price than Macy's had the same set. Ive used them a ton since and they still look brand new. Might be worth stopping there to just look!
  • I love my Briggs & Riley luggage. It comes in all the different sizes. It also has a lifetime warranty. They will fix it forever. Seriously. They are expensive if you get it full price, but my aunt has been cruising eBay lately, and is finding it for half off (she bought FI an expandable carry on to be his b-day present this way). I guess some luggage retailers Have been selling overstock on eBay to keep product moving. I think it's worth checking out for whatever brand you ultimately choose.

Ditto on Briggs & Riley! I spent a lot of time deciding between Rimowa and B&R.

  • Tumi and Victorinox.  I just bought a set from Victorinox and itäs awesome.  My H has had a V suitcase for about 8 years, and it's survived a dozen trips to China, Europe, all over Europe, moving to Italy, moving to Sweden, etc.  When something is broken, he sends it in and the fix it and send it back.  Awesome.

BTW, you do NOT want to carry anything over 24" around.  I promise.  For 2 weeks, you can definitely make do with something smaller.  I'm an over packer and even I can do 2 weeks (especially in the type of weather you will have) with one 22" suitcase.  If you get anything bigger you will never use it.  I have one 30" that I used when I moved my entire life overseas. Suffice it to say, 4 years later, it still has that tag on it.
  • I agree with Snippy.  Your life will be much better if you can keep to 22" suitcases.  We have a 30", and the few times we use it, we just hate it -- it's heavy and awkward to lift.  It's most useful for moving large things around, but I'd hate if I had to schlepp it around the place.
  • I have a carry-on size Samsonite that I love love love.  I've been using it since college (so...probably almost 8 years?) and travel frequently, and it's certainly withstood the test of time and travel

<div>Ditto Samsonite, and right now, at this very second, Samsonite luggage is 'buy one, get one free' at Kohls.</div><div>
</div><div>Interestingly enough, I wanted to buy a few pieces sooo bad, but my Apartment 9 luggage (from Kohls) is still in excellent shape, and I travel frequently.  So I passed.</div>

  • For best prices check overstock.com, I've found great prices on set. And please get spinning (or rotating) wheels, they make life so much easier!
  • for 2 weeks you need to plan on using one mid sized piece of luggage and no more. and you certainly dont need a whole set.
if you'll be there for 2 weeks (aside of wedding wear) you'll only need shorts, bathing suits, tanks, tees and some nice pieces to mix and match for dinner. dh and i are in mexico every december for 10 days to 2 weeks. we pack for only 3 or 4 days and then just wash the clothes.
you also need to make yourself aware of luggage weight limits and/or # of pieces restrictions.
