Average spent on honeymoon

How much is everyone using on their honeymoon?  I am just trying to figure in if I am spending too much.  We are planning a ten day cruise to Italy and Greece.  We are staying at Rome for a couple days before.  It will be two weeks in all.  In all we are spending $8000 on our honeymoon.  Is this about right or too much?

Re: Average spent on honeymoon

  • We spent almost exactly 3000 to go to Riveria Maya in September 2011 for 6 days. From what others have told me, we got an excellent deal!

  • Our budget is $4000-$5000. My mother is giving me $4000. But I have $1000 I can add to it if needed.

We are going to Riveria Maya in Mexico in September 2011.

  • My FIL's are paying for it and have been saving up a "honeymoon" account for both FI and his brother for when they get married (they couldn't afford a HM, so they wanted to make sure their sons could). They are giving us $10,000 to plan a HM we want and if anything is left over, we can keep it. We're doing Hawaii and after airfare and hotel for 9 days, we're at $6500. We're hoping to have at least a grand to bring back and put in savings.

  • We're spending $3350.00 for Couples Tower Isle in Jamaica.

That price includes our airfare, resort, transportation to and from, all food, beverages, excuriouns.

    I think we're getting a good deal!
  • We spent about $5k for an AI in Montego Bay Jamaica. That price included airfare as well.
  • Lol thanks everyone.  I think we might be overspending.  I really didn't want to do the anywhere that is shore like.  I am not a big fan, and my FI hates the hot weather.  We are big into sightseeing so this is why we decided on Italy and Greece. We have always talked about seeing Italy.  Well I hope it is worth the money.
  • We spent about 7k on 8 days, 7 nights in Greece (Athens and Santorini) 5 star hotels. It was so worth it!!!! Best time of our lives!

  • We're spending about $6000 for two weeks in Paris and a couple of cities in Italy. We're also budgeting an additional $3000 or so for food and excursions. I don't think there's any such thing as over spending. Spend what you can afford and are comfortable with. If my future in-laws were not giving us $7000 to do with what we wished, our honeymoon would be looking very different..

  • Noone can tell you what is the right amount to spend on a HM except for yourself. My budget may be completely different then someone else's. For my FI and I, the Hm is a very important part of our wedding because we REALLY need to get away (we have two 3 year olds...oh man, haha), So we decided to splurge a bit and are spending about $6000-7000. However, that amount of money may seem ABSURD to other people just to take a vacation. It's all about your own personal finances and what you can afford. If you can afford to take an $8000 HM then it's not too expensive. HTH! =]
  • We spent around $15000 on our 12 night honeymoon to Italy (Rome, Positano and Capri).  More if you count our shopping Wink  We stayed in 5 star hotels and flew business class.  It was well worth the money.  If you can afford it go for it, you won't regret it!
  • We'll be spending around $15000 for our 11 night South African honeymoon.  We decided that we don't think we'llbe going back to Africa anytime soon, so we might as well do it right.
  • who cares what others spend? spend what your budget allows and what you're comfortable with.

It's all relative on how long you go, time of year, where you live and are going etc...plus on what you can afford.

It's really not apples to apples to compare to anyone.  I'd recommend just spending what you can and going where you want within that price range.

That being said, we HMed 8 days in Riveria Maya and paid ~$4000
  • Best advice is to figure out your budget and then compare the price quotes that you get.

We spent quite a bit more than has been mentioned, but it was well within our budget.  Spend what you are comfortable with and just make sure you dont put yourself in debt on a vacation.

  • Our 7-day cruite to the western caribbean is $1750, flight is about $1000 for both of us.  We'll probably spend around $500 on the trip for other things.  So the total will probably be around $3250.  Most of that is a gift that we don't have to pay.  $8000 seems like way too much to me because that amount is about what our wedding is costing us.  If you can afford it though or it's a gift then enjoy it.
  • We're spending ~$6000 on 9 days in Hawaii, though about $1000 of that is for our wedding ceremony while we're on the island.  Also, we've not doing anything extravagant or staying anywhere fancy...It would be very easy/understandable to spend $8000 and for the trip not to be extravagant. Spend the $ and enjoy the trip!
  • We're spending about $8,000 for a week in Curacao - and its not all inclusive, but we can't wait! It's going to be amazing. You only get one honeymoon :)

I was going to say that it is comparing apples to oranges!

Figure out your budget and go from there. Just like weddings, there is no set amount to spend, some people get married at city hall and some people spend 50K, it just depends on their circumstances.
  • St Lucia for a week all inclusive, air faire and all $5,000... Spend what you can/want you only have one honeymoon :)
  • Considering my entire budget is the same amount as your honeymoon, OP, I'd say your overspending. But that's for me and my budget. I'd LOVE that trip, so if it's in your budget go for it! We're probably only going to spend about 4k on ours...but that's the price we pay for getting married right out of college and not having savings yet (so we only have what our parents are contributing to spend on the wedding).
  • Our dream was to go to Bora Bora, but after learning that the airfare alone was close to $5000, the total trip would have been $12-15000 for 7 days -- far too expensive!! No food or anything was included either, and the restaurants there look pricey. Maybe we'll save up for that when our 25th anniversary comes. :)

Now, we're looking into an all-inclusive Sandals resort in Antigua (Caribbean). Looks like we can get 2 weeks their in a beach front room for around $6000. Much better!!

Sandals even has a Gift Registry which allows people to purchase gift cards to the Resort that you're staying at. You can use them toward your room price, or they can choose to buy gift cards for specific items (massages, excursions, snorkeling, etc.). We're hoping to have a good contribution from guests to really cut down the cost of our honeymoon!
  • We are spending about 2500 on our honeymoon with a four day cruise to mexico and a 4 night stay at DisneyLand, but we are definitly on a tight budget and are paying for most of the wedding and honemoon with no help. But i definitly agree that if you have the money and are able to, spend as much as you would like and enjoy every minute of it :) there are very few times in your life when you get to take a trip like this.

  • $10K for Bora Bora... chance and experience of a lifetime - FI and I have been saving to treat ourselves well. no one is helping us but we figured we will probably never have the opportunity to do it again.

Just as other said, its all relative for what you can afford, where you are going, what time of year, which excursions you like to take, the quality of the food you eat, etc.

  • We looked into doing a European cruise through Italy/Greece and knew it would be around $8,000 - way out of our budget.  But if it's in yours, go for it!  Especially if the plans for your life involve starting a family and other things which may make it hard to justify another trip like this.  It's just like weddings; everyone has a different budget but the important thing is to make sure it's reasonable for your situation.

We are spending $2,650 on air, 4-star resort accomodations for 7 nights and a rental car for our Hawaiian honeymoon this January.  I found a package deal and then a travel agent who beat it.  I'm planning to spend at least another $500 - $1,000 on food, activities, etc.  I am a social worker and my husband does freelance graphic design, so for us even this is a stretch.  We couldn't afford it right after our wedding but can't wait to finally treat ourselves.  (Bonus....we've been married for 1 1/2 yrs and have decided this will also be our "baby moon," as we're going to try to conceive on the trip!)  Wink
  • We're estimating $7,000 so far for 11 nights/12 days in Hawaii- going to two islands- that doesn't include food.  That's $1600 worth of activities, $1800 estimated on flights (not including inter-island), $550 on car rentals and 11 nights at Marriott resorts.  We wanted to stay at a nice resort rather than condo because we figured our HM is a once in a lifetime trip.

Budgeting $200/day for extras like food and souveniers but I'm sure we'll come in below that.  If we stay on schedule with our saving, we'll be at over $11,000 and plan to come in under $10K for the HM so we can stick the rest in savings.

We were lucky enough to have my parents offer/insist on paying for the entire wedding, so this is our only wedding expense other than rings and WP gifts.  Also FI got a new job this fall paying 40% more than his last one!  Yiippeee!

OregonSarah~ incredible price for Hawaii!!  I thought about looking into a TA but wasn't sure how much they could save us.  Looks like it worked out really well for you- have fun!!
