St. John USVI - Where to stay

Hello!  My FI and I are hoping to go to St. John in the USVI.  We want to stay away from the typical tourist areas and I heard that if we rent a vacation home, the cost is a lot less in comparison to the resorts.  Does anyone know where the best area on the island would be to rent a vacation home?

Re: St. John USVI - Where to stay

  • I've been a few times and I think it'll depend on what you want to do for food and stuff. If you want to go out to eat all the time I'd stay not too far from town, if you want to do cooking at home then you can really stay anywhere you want. I've used the website VRBO.com, vacation rentals by owner, make sure to read the reviews about each place and you can see on the map how far a drive they are into town or to specific beaches. It's a beautiful place, that was where we were going to go but it was during the rainy season so I didn't want to take my chances. One cool thing you can do if you have a passport while you're there is take the ferry to some of the british virgin islands too.
  • We're renting a cottage in St. John on Cruz Bay (a friend recommended it).  It's small and only has a microwave and toaster but a BEAUTIFUL view.  To us that was ok cuz we don't want to cook on vacation and we don't need a big room.  But if you do our place isn't the place.  For 6 days in middle October we're paying a little over $1,000.  This place is supposed to be close enough to everything to walk but far enough to be relaxing.

  • We just came back from our honeymoon about 2 weeks ago and miss it soooo much. We went to St John for 10 days and rented the Meritage Cottage in Chocolate Hole. Chocolate Hole is near Cruz Bay, but the whole island is small, so getting to the other end (Coral Bay) isn't hard. Also, I suggest you rent a Jeep, that's what we did. When you go to Coral Bay, check out the Donkey Diner for breakfast, it's DELICIOUS!

Hope you have so much fun on your honeymoon.

Oh and I found the cottage on homeaway.com
