How long should our honeymoon be?

My fiancé and I are in the midst of planning our honeymoon.  The only thing we're stuck on is how long to go.  Is ten days too long of a honeymoon?  We're thinking seven days should be a good middle ground to shoot for, but we just aren't sure yet!

Any suggestions or former Knotties have advice on what would be a good length for our honeymoon?

Thanks in advance! Smile

Re: How long should our honeymoon be?

  • You have to choose how long you want to go for and how long of a vacation you can afford.

    H and I went for 15 days.
  • I think it all depends on where you're going and what your budget is.

Had we gone with Hawaii we would have gone for 2 weeks. I feel like any less just wouldn't be enough (coming from the east coast). Instead we're doing a ski trip to Aspen and I think we're going for about 10 days.
  • I agree with PPs. We're going to an AI in Mexico and we can afford 7 nights, and 8 days. It all depends on where you're going, how long you can afford it for, and how long you can take off of work. We had to factor in taking off about 2 weeks from work so we had a couple days before the wedding, the wedding day, then HM time, then a couple days after HM to recoup.
  • I think it depends where you're going. If you're going someplace like Disney World I think a week is plenty of time. Same for Vegas. More than that and I think I'd get sick of it and be ready to come home.

We went to Hawaii and did 9 days. If we had gone to two islands, we would have stayed even longer. If you are going someplace far away, I would go longer because 2-3 days could easily be taken up by travel.

    Vacation
  • First you set your budget, then you decide how far that will go and whether you are staying in one place, or having a driving vacation.

We spent 14 days driving down the coast of California in September, from San Fran to Coronado Bay near San Diego. With rental of a convertible, and 12 nights in hotels, 2 with family members, it cost us $6000. My airfare was free with my Delta Sky Miles, my fiance's was $400.

We stayed in some high end hotels, some not so high end.
  • It al depends on what you want, what you can afford, and where you are going!!  My FI and I are going to Santorini for our honeymoon and it costs about 3000 total for the flights for both of us there and back.  The hotel is about 2000 and we are going for 14 nights.  We just couldn't see spending all that money then staying only a week!!!

  • We are going to cozumel for 8 days. That is more about our budget and because we have a 2 year old daughter that I just couldn't bare to leave any longer than that. But otherwise I would say the long the better!

  • If you've got the funds and the time, a longer honeymoon is always better, IMO!

  • We are only going for 5 nights.  Our wedding is at the beach, and we are spending the entire week at the beach before the wedding... So... almost two weeks away from home is definitely enough!

We're going to St. Lucia for 10 days. St. Lucia has plenty of activities so we're going to do those mixed in with lazy pool/beach days. We were also deciding between two hotels (Sandals Grande and Sandales LaToc) and we chose LaToc because it's cheaper than the Grande. We'd only be able to spend a week if we chose the Grande.

So, first decide a budget, then a destination? Are there lots of things to do there? How affordable? ect. I know my FI and I won't get bored in St. Lucia for that long- but 10 days might be too long for us elsewhere. KWIM?

  • Ditto pp's.. it all depends on where you're going and what your budget it.

We flew to Vegas spent two nights there, rented a car and drove to LA to fly to Fiji for a week. Then, when we got back home we had a few more days off from work to unwind and catch up on sleep from all the jet lag. When we were in Fiji we crossed the international dateline and our sleep pattern was all kinds of messed up for a few days after we got home. We definitely needed extra time before going back to our normal routine.

I agree with all of this.

I had off 3 days before the wedding, 7nights/8 day HM in Mexico (which is a 2.5 hr flight for us) and then had 1.5 days off after the HM to organize and unpack before returning to work.

I definitely recommend trying to schedule to have one full day home after your HM before returning to work!
  • dh and i regularly go to mexico every year for 2 weeks. i have no issue with going for a longer vacation vs. a shorter one. as long as your budget allows get as much time in as you can.

  • We went to Fiji for alittle over 3 weeks and it was great!  We loved spending the time together.  But that was also a place tthat involved a long flight to get to and a week wasn't an option.  IMO the most important thing is to look at what you can afford.

  • Heck, I'd go for as long as possible, is there such a thing as "too long" when you're on vacation, not to mention your honeymoon?
