Travel Insurance?

What are your opinions about travel insurance?  What is your experience with travel insurance?  We are book an AI trip costing less than $3,000, we are trying to determine if we should get travel insurance.

Thanks.

Re: Travel Insurance?

  • Yes, get it! Out of our last 3 vacations, we used it once and almost needed it a second time. My grandmother died the day of our wedding, and we almost didn't go on our honeymoon. Having the ability to cancel/postpone without charge was huge. This past October, we were "stuck" on vacation for an extra 3 days - travel insurance paid for all the expenses we incurred those 3 days (hotel, food, alcohol, car rental, etc).

  • I would get it. For our CA trip last year, it was less than $100 for both of us and would have reimbursed us for basically any reason--weather, illness, emergency comes up, etc. It was a minimal cost that would've gotten us thousands back if we couldn't have made the trip.

Also you said AI which makes me think you might be in the Caribbean or Mexico. Though the likelihood of a hurricane striking while you are there is very slim, it's always a distant possibility, so I'd rather be safe than sorry.

We went with Travel Guard for our HM cruise per CMGr's recommendation.  The coverage and rates were good and it was very easy to purchase online.  Luckily, we didn't need to use it.  But it gave us peace of mind to have it!

  • Thanks Ladies, we opted for the insurance.  Certainly offers piece of mind.
  • It can't hurt, and most prices are extremely reasonable. I like TravelEx!
  • I've never gotten travel insurance before but I did for our HM. We went with TruTravel.

  • Yes! Our honeymoon was canceled and rebooked twice due to hurricanes. We didn't lose a penny either time.

  • Yes!  Our honeymoon was delayed a week due to Hurricane Sandy.  I was panicking that we were going to lose all of our money since we didn't have insurance.  The airline and resort were understanding since it was such a crazy circumstance, but I'm not sure we'd get that lucky in the future without insurance.  It's absolutely worth it.
