Passport Questions

Hey ladies!

My fiance and I just booked our honeymoon to Jamaica! Super exciting Laughing However, we are getting married July 27th and we're not going on our honeymoon until October 16th. Kinda sucks, but it'll be nice to leave Ohio when it's starting to get chilly!

Anyways, I do not have a passport currently. I'm trying to figure out what to do. I'm assuming my passport at time of travel will have to have my new name on it. I am planning on changing my name immediately after the wedding and I've heard it's a process. Should I go ahead and buy my passport now and then get the name changed on it? I read that there is no fee for this, but can take 4-6 weeks. I don't know if I want to deal with the stress of trying to get a brand new passport in addition to everything else that will need to be changed.

Please let me know what your suggestions are!! Thanks :)

Re: Passport Questions

  • Personally, because changing your name can be such a process and your passport can take a long time, I'm not chaning my name until after I get back from my HM.  That way my passport still has my maiden name and I don't run into issues.  I would suggest getting your passport with your maiden name and switching it later along with everything else.  If you wait, you probably will need your new SS card, birth certificate, and license BEFORE you can even apply for a new passport.  Is there any reason you want to change your name so quickly?
  • No, just excited I guess! Laughing

  • Also, the name on your passport must match the name of the booking, especially with plane tickets. So whatever name you booked it under, your passport has to have that name.
  • your passport will hae a date of issuance on it.
you have one year from that date of issuance to change your name for free.
i would apply for one in june in your mainen name (that way you dont have to expedite, have plenty of time etc..) and you'll get it far before october.  then after the HM you can send  in the passport wtih the corresponding paperwork and have a new name passport issued. IMPORTANT: your tickets have to match your passport so if you travel with your maiden name passport you must book your flights etc...,.in maiden name.

and changing your name is not an ordeal. you simply need to send in the  paperwork. since the passport agency is not linked to any other agency you dont haev to change them all at the same time. you absolutely do NOT need a new social security card, license etc.. as the other poster assumes.

Good to know!  I haven't started but assumed that you would need to start with the social security card & whatnot.  Thanks for clarifying!
  • You do have to send in your Birth Certificate in with it as well. They will mail it back to you. So make sure this will not interfere with your marriage license. You may not have it for a few weeks.

Also, if you get or renew a passport in your maiden name, you can get another one with the name change for free within one year

ETA: I just saw you already knew this. I would just get the passport now and change it after you come back. Espeically if you already booked it, like a PP said, your passport has to match what the trip is booked in. Just wait.
  • does anyone know about the address listed in passport.  I just recently got a new passport but we will be moving before our honeymoon.  Do i have to change my address on my passport?
  • Ditto what Ali said; as long as you be sure to change to your married name passport within a year of when the maiden name passport is issued, it'll be free. It's the easiest way.

Jersey- your address isnt listed on the main page of your passport; just basic info like name, passport #, dates, etc. You're fine.
