Where can I go for a mini honeymoon in MD, PA, Northern VA or even DE in July? Gotta' be budget friendly though!

When we went on vacation a couple of summers ago to DC, we went to Gettysburgh. We stayed at the Battlefield B&B and it's adorable! Lovely rooms, fabulous breakfast (sorry, I don't remember the cost). There's a lot of history in that area.

DC can be pricey, but everything you want to see is FREE (Smithsonian museums, monuments). The cheapest and nicest hotel we've found (my son lived in DC) was the State Plaza in Foggy Bottom. It's an old apartment building turned into a hotel. The rooms have flat screens in the living room and bedroom, there are full kitchens so you can save money on food. There is a CVS around the corner that sells a lot of microwaveable meals and fresh food. It's a 5 block walk to the Lincoln Monument. However, if you drive, there is a fee of about $30 per night to have your car in the garage.

Also, look into the beaches in the coastal states. Start with a map, then look on www.tripadvisor.com for the cities that look good near the beach.

B&B's will often be cheaper than chain hotels and offer a nicer ambiance for a honeymoon.

    Good luck.

Wow! Thanks! You gave me a lot to think about!

  • I'm from Northern VA, and there is plenty to do in the area depending on what you're interested in.  As Sue said, the fun stuff in DC is free, as long as you can find an affordable place to stay.  I recently discovered the National Arboretum which was beautiful if you like nature stuff.  Also in that category there's Sugarloaf Mountain in MD (great for hiking) and Great Falls (you can visit the MD or VA side!).
If you like history, the Smithsonians of DC are great (I prefer the natural history to the American history museum), and the National Art Gallery is nearby and probably my favorite DC tourist place (and i'm not even that into art). Of course there's all the monuments as well.  Mt. Vernon (George Washington's home) is in Northern VA too, my mother used to work there so we visit often, and they keep adding more things to see and do. Philadelphia is also a great history hot spot if you're interested in PA. I've only been twice and I know I've barely scratched the surface of it's richness.  Same deal with $ though, most of the good stuff is free but the area is pricey.
Sorry I did not mean for this to become so long, but last thing I would mention is Bethany Beach in DE.  I went with my youth group in high school and it was beautiful, but I couldn't tell you about prices there so you'd have to research.
    Congrats and good luck!
  • We're hoping to do a mini-moon in Vermont.  we found a B&B that has decent mid-week rates and is near a whole bunch of breweries and wineries that offer tours (some free others $4-5 a person) so we're planning to do that, the Ben and Jerry's factory, Cabot cheese factory, and champlain chocolate factories are also in the area, so we can do that too.  We're bringing our bicycles so we'll probably go for a ride one day. we're thinking we can do the whole thing for under $800.

  • You guys really helped me a lot.  I finally narrowed it down and booked the Carosel Hotel in Ocean City, MD! I' so excited!
