Letter of invitation for visas

Not sure the best place to ask my question but here it goes.

We are inviting guests to the wedding that are overseas and will need a letter of invitation along with a copy of our US passport in order to gain a visa. My question is, I don't know these guests very well (friends of FI parents, and they don't have a US Passport). Is there any concerns I should have if I send my information to the embassy and they come to the states and don't return?

Am I held responsible if they do anything wrong?

  • You should probably contact the state department for clarification rather than asking internet strangers because there's a lot of misinformation out there. My husband's family is from overseas as well and I just find it best to go straight to the source. Personally, I doubt that you have anything to be worried about. It's been my experience (DH's family is from a different country as well) that guests who travel internationally for weddings, aren't usually the type that engage in criminality. If you are so worried about it, then just have your husband use his passport and write the letter.

Thanks! I will find out what are the laws for these circumstances. If we are responsibile for them than I don't want my FI or I to send invitations to people we don't know.
