St. Lucia in September (Hurricane Season) - Are we crazy?

We have wanted to go to St. Lucia for our honeymoon since we got engaged, as we've heard how wonderful it is and so on...

Our wedding is September 1st, and we wanted to go on our honeymoon the 8th-16th. Are we crazy to try to go there during hurricane season? We would obviously get travel insurance, but what do you all think? Has anyone gone there and run into this problem? I don't want to get there, pay all this money, and then have it rain everyday. I just wanted to get some of your opinions on the situation. Many people say, "you can't worry about that" or "it's not as likely to get hit with a storm in St. Lucia" but I just need to think about it a little more. I want to make sure we're doing the right thing!

We would consider other islands, but we want the all-inclusive experience, and most of them are in the hurricane "belt" anyways. If anyone has advice on this, that'd be great! Tell me if I'm crazy to want to go there in September! Thanks!

I have been on two caribbean cruises in October (one that went to St. Lucia), so I don't think you're nuts.  Get the travel insurance and have a great time!

  • You're not crazy!! My wedding is Sept 15 and FI and I seriously want to go the St. Lucia route.  We were worried about hurricanes too but just met someone on our cruise two weeks ago who is from St. Lucia and he said it's really not an issue because it's so far south. He also said it's one of the most beautiful places in the world (he's probably biased) but the pictures look amazing.  We're seriously considering it, but travel insurance will definitely be purchased.  Good luck!!!
  • Just get the insurance! If you book through Funjet or Apple (or similar) their insurance is "cancel for any reason" up until your flight leaves.
  • As long as you have travel insurance and are prepared to not go on your vacation (perhaps make alternate arrangements close to home in case of emergency) then go for it.  You are obviously aware of the risks.
  • St. Lucia is beautiful! We went there for a day on a cruise a few years ago. It's still one of my favorite places ever visited.

Definitely get the insurance and use a travel agent that will help you plan alternatives. We were married September 9th, and the morning after our agent called with a recommendation to postpone our trip (we were leaving on the 12th). Three back-to-back hurricanes canceled our trip to Anguilla not once but TWICE. Finally, we gave up and went to Barbados in October instead (Barbados and Aruba are the two islands further out of the hurricane belt). As long as you have a Plan B and C, and know you may not actually make it there, you should be fine. Conversely, my friend who got married the same day as Hurricane Irene rescheduled her trip to St. John three times, got stuck in Puerto Rico for two nights and lost out on her hotel points. She didn't take the insurance. The insurance may seem expensive but in the long run it's worth it. Good luck!
