After DH and I had a
fabulous honeymoon in Disney World, we flew Spirit AIrlines to his school in Freeport, Grand Bahama. The airline frequents the Bahamas and South America, so I thought I would post a review as those are popular honeymoon destinations. I'm copying and pasting here, so I hope it doesn't get too wonky....
Orlando to Ft. Lauderdale to Freeport, Bahamas. This was the worst flying experience I have ever had and I would rather pay hundreds more for an airline ticket than ever fly them again. We were flying from our Honeymoon in Disney to my husband's school in Freeport. When we got to the airport to check in they informed us that I couldn't fly because I didn't have a round trip ticket. They then forced us to by a $260 return ticket that the clerk swore up and down was 100% refundable.
When my husband called to get his refund, he was informed that it was in fact NOT refundable because the ticket that was previously booked in my name was non-refundable and evidently that made the whole thing non-refundable. After a stern discussion with the customer service rep (who kept calling a “patient” rather than a “customer”) he was told he would get his money back. They refunded the wrong ticket, which was $200 less than the one that was supposed to be refunded.
During the phone conversation my husband told the rep that he didn’t want a voucher for a different flight because he would never fly Spirit again. At the end of the conversation the rep asked him if he wanted to join their frequent flyer program and if he wanted to sign up for the Spirit credit card. Uh, NO! In addition, we had two checked bags each because we are staying in Freeport for four months.
The airline failed to contact us prior to the flight about a baggage embargo that only allowed us to check one bag each. However, no other student flying on different airlines had this “embargo.” We had to speak to the rude clerk’s supervisor and I had to shed some pretty heavy tears before they would agree to check one extra bag. The other one they “graciously” allowed me to carry on. The bags were then lost during our three-hour Ft. Lauderdale layover. There was sufficient time for the bags to be transferred; yet they were left behind. I’m shocked that they actually made it back to us the next day.
As for the plane rides themselves, they were both short flights, but landing at Ft. Lauderdale was concerning because the pilot touched down on the right, then lifted back up, and touched down again. The flight to Freeport was even more terrifying because of the drops we encountered, which I can’t know for sure was due to the pilot, but I’ve never experienced any type of turbulence like that before.
We received no apology from anyone with the airlines about the hassle or lost baggage. We found out too late that Spirit Airlines is not accredited with the Better Business Bureau and we should have read the reviews online of other customer’s experiences. We will never fly Spirit again under any circumstances.
