Trying to pick a honeymoon- avg cost based on country?

Hi, I'm new to this board. We're getting married in June and haven't decided on where to go for the honeymoon yet. My main thing is that I want a gorgeous beach. A nice resort with stuff to do and safe area would be nice too. We were considering Thailand, Mexico, Carribbean, Spain, Italy... Haven't really narrowed it down too much. I just don't want to stay in the US.

Has anyone found a website that compares the avg cost of a honeymoon based on different countires?

  • Yeah, that is all over the map. I recommend going on travelocity or expedia and pricing flights to these destinations from Dallas. Then, assume $300/night for hotel (could be more, could be less, I have no idea what your budget is) and then assume around $200/day spending (again could be more, could be less based on resort type or destination). Europe will be up there in expenses, as Italy is pricey once you get there. Getting to Thailand is pricey, but once you are there, you can spend a little to get alot. The Caribbean is probably your best bet on a budget as there are a ton of options and the flight costs won't be as great. I also recommend checking on the climate in those regions for that time of year. Just google "Climate in X in June" and see what pops up.

  • I'm not sure about a website.  When planning trips in the past, I've used Frommer's.  Stop in  a book store and browse through the travel section for useable guides.
  • I think you need to decide what your budget is because your destinations are all over the map (geographically and financially)

  • The problem with average price is that even that, is all over the board. It depends on what type of travel you are used to or okay with. We have some people come on here that have a 1500 budget and want to go to Paris. That is never going to happen honestly. So you have to figure out your budget and go from there. You can go to Mexico and spend anywhere from $1,800 to $10,000+. It honestly is so far across the board that you need to narrow down your budget and your expectations before you decide exactly where you want to go.

I was thinking about that after I posted. I have been to resorts in the Caribbean where I spent $200/night and ones where I have spent almost $700/night. It really is all over the map. I def agree with figuring out budget first and then having the OP come back on here and see if anyone has done a destination in that budget. I think a lot of places can be eliminated just by doing a search on airfare! As you said, if your budget is $1500 and you want to go to Paris, your budget will be gone as soon as you book your flights!

  •  Also, just laying on the beach is cheap. Doing activities near a beach cost money (snorkeling, scuba, horse back riding, trips into nearby jungles, local cultural exhibits, etc). Are you planning a lay on the beach honeymoon, or an adventure with a bit of beach time? I can't handle more than 1-1.5 days on a beach in a given week so even if I'm staying on/near a beach I end up booking TONS more things to do so my trips cost more than someone who really just wants to enjoy laying on the beach.
  • that really all depends on which hotel and when you plan on going, which room type, etc..
so no. there is no way. but since you ahve so much time you can easily plan it out and just add it up.

as far as italy-i'm wondering if you have the same criteria there as for the caribbean. it's not the same. i've done it for 1300 total for the week (airfare and hotels-really nice ones-in rome and florence) and 5k for the week during a different time of year.  having been there 2 times in sept/oct and another end of jan/feb there's no way i'd go in june-height of tourist season. so if you want my opinion i'd save italy for a trip another time-not during the summer.

  • Dude.  If you're going to Italy or Spain, don't just lie on the beach.  Go tour and see stuff.  If you want a beach/resort that's fine, but then stay closer to home, save (a lot of) money, and eliminate jet lag.  In other words, go Caribbean.  Europe is "romantic," but frankly I think it's a total waste of a trip to just be a beach bum the entire time while you're over there.
