U.S. Virgin Islands

My FI and I are wanting to go to the U.S. Virgin Islands for our Honeymoon in order to avoid the hassle of getting passports and planning a wedding all at the same time.  I was just wondering, has anyone been? Do you have an island you would recommend?  What about an all-inclusive resort?

I have started searching but all the options and different islands seem overwhelming so I would like some input if people have been before.

Thanks!

[QUOTE]USVI is pretty pricey.  It'll be far cheaper to drop the money to get your passports now and travel to somewhere less expensive.

<div>I'm not choosing the virgin islands because I want to save money on passports.  I realize other places are cheaper.  The problem is we are planning a wedding in Texas while living in Ohio, while also moving this summer to a completely different state.  Its just one other thing to worry about getting done that I just don't want to deal with right now.  That being said we looked at Hawaii and the USVI, and decided on the USVI because airfare from Dallas will be cheaper to go there, and we don't know anyone who has been there so it'd be somewhat unique.  One day we'll get passports, just now is not the time with everything else going on.</div>
  • Like pps have said, St. John if you can swing it!  The beaches there are paradise.  You can fly into St. Thomas and take the ferry over - sounds more complicated than it is.  I was not a fan of St. Thomas so I can't recommend going there for your hm.  You haven't mentioned what your budget is, but I would have a look at Caneel Bay or, if not, the Westin.  You could also look into renting your own private villa - there are a LOT to choose from on St. John.

I haven't mentioned the budget cause I'm not really sure what it is. Probably no more than 5k. What didn't you like about st. Thomas? Other than gorgeous beaches, what makes st. John better?

Is st.croix not good? No one has mentioned it at all. I'm just wondering so I can pick the best island for us!

The amount of money you will save going to an AI in another location is signifcantly more than what passports cost ($140/person). So, that statement does not really make any sense to me at all. I have been to many AIs and to the VIs, so I can speak first hand to that.

BTW- I just sent my passport in yesterday to be renewed. It literally took me 2 hours in total to fill out the forms, get the picture taken, and mail it from the post office. The post office I mailed it from is a good 20 minutes from my house and I'm factoring in travel time. It's really not a big deal at all....

I don't know what doesn't make sense. My original post never said I want to save money by not getting a passport. I realize the passport cost is insignficant. I also know other options and places to go are cheaper, just like other places are also in turn more expensive.

At this time, I do not want to deal with a passport, selling a house, moving to one state and planning a wedding in another, all while working full time and raising a 6 year old. I don't need the extra thing to worry about right now.

That being said, I'll look into the places already suggested and we will make our decision.

I will say that I apologize. I misread your statement in that post. However, I do stand by my statement that it's not a big deal to get one. I realize I'm some random person who doesn't know you, but I planned my wedding while commuting back and forth between two states every weekend, working more than 40 hours a week while attempting to get my master's degree. Oh, and my DH has two teenage girls, one of whom is quite a handful. We're all in a position that we have a lot going on. So, we can relate. I really enjoyed my time in the USVI and hopefully you can find something that works for you.

  • My FI and I booked our honeymoon spot on St. John last week!  Much for the same reason(s) you mentioned...  no passport issues, customs, cheaper airfare from the southeast, etc.

I'm not sure wha specifically it is about St. John - I've never been, but it is supposed to have amazing beaches, most of the island is protected national forests, and I believe the east side of island is a little less touristy and just serene.   We are staying at www.monsweptstjohn.com. We found them on homeaway.com.   We were drawn to a private house as we wanted a little more space, privacy, and flexibility than a resort.  My FI loves to cook/grill, so being somewhere we could hang out and do that for ourselves is exactly what we wanted.   Our summer is their low season.  Best of luck!
  • getting a passport is easier than getting an oil change.

dont forget: puerto rico and (obviously as it's a state) hawaii fall into that category as well.

AIs are pretty non-existant in the USVI.

keep in mind if you want to take a ferry to one of the BVIS you will need a passport to do so.
