Books for the honeymoon

I'm leaving for my honeymoon in a couple weeks & we will be in Mexico for 12 days. I'm looking for book suggestions for the pool. Nothing serious or that requires me to think too much :) I already read dragon tattoo and I have no interest in twilight or the hunger games stuff. Other than that, I'll take your suggestions!

Thanks!

  • The 50 Shades of Grey Trilogy.  It is amazing, I loved it.  And what better to read on your honeymoon than a love story!

    Seriously?  I mean... again, seriously?

OP -  Did you like Girl with the Dragon Tattoo?  You might like "In the Woods" by Tana French.  I also like "The Other Boleyn Girl" by Phillipa Gregory, "The Secret History" by Donna Tartt, and both "Peony in Love" and "Snow Flower and Secret Fan" by Lisa See.

I think those cover many types of books (mystery, history, love).  I'm not good at the more bubblegym type books (like Emily Giffin) because I don't read them.  Maybe someone else with suggestions on that front.

    Happy honeymoon!
  • One of my favorite series was The Secret History of the Pink Carnation by Lauren Willig, kinda fluffy but also a mystery. I second The Other Boleyn Girl

  • The Book Thief was very good.  It's a historical novel that takes place in Nazi Germany about a little girl.

Let Me In was very good.  It's a vampire novel, but not like Twilight.

A Thousand Splendid Suns was fantastic.  (The Kite Runner is also good, but I liked this book more)

Neverwhere is one of the strangest books I've ever read, but I absolutely loved it.  I would say it's one of my favorite books.

I know you said no Twilight and no Hunger Games, but I've read them and liked them.  They are much, much better than the ridiculously cheesy movies and they're easy reads.

I have read these and can tell you I lost brain cells by the end-I would never recommend these books to anyone.
Its not so much a love story as a book with the same sex scene recycled over and over again. I would comment on the plot but the book would have to have one in order to comment.

I like nice easy light reads on vacay as well and have grown to love Christopher Moore.
My favourite book from him is "Lamb" I was laughing so hard I cried at times.

People always ask me why I haven't read 50 Shades and this just confirms why...

I tend to like YA novels... I know, lame. I really like
historical and fantasy novels though. Something that can grab my
attention. I get bored easily with books so it either has to have a great plot
    or something is always changing.

    My suggestions:

    The Luxe Series
    (Young Adult Historical Novels, Dramatic)

A Song of Fire and Ice Series
(Nerdy read! But it would take you the entire trip to read all the
    books)

Tamora Pierce - She is one of my favorite authors. But I have been reading her books since I was a teenager. Very fantasy based. Heroine based almost always. Usually good to start with Song of the Lioness series.

I know you said no to The Hunger Games but I have a love hate relationship with
those books. Or maybe just Katniss. Very interesting read.

  • Divergent Series, you may or may not like. It's young adult science fiction type but really easy reads.

Otherwise, I generally like chick-flick type books for beach vacations; pretty much everything by Jane Green
  • OP-what kinds of books do you like? i could list books all day but if they're my taste, and not yours, it wont do you any good.

to be honest when i'm on a beach vacay i bring books that i can really pay attention to-not so much mindless, as i can sit and read for hours at a time.

When I was on our honeymoon, I read Julia Child's memior, My Life in Paris. It's a light, easy read and I enjoy cooking and food.

It's hard to recommend books when I don't know what kind of books you like to read, but here are few suggestions of books I've read:

Just finished reading - The Name on The Wind, by Patrick Rothfuss
Reading currently - the sequel to the book mentioned above, The Wise Man's Fear

The Time Travelers Wife, by Audrey Neffeneger

Water for Elephants, by Sara Gruen

Any of the books by Dan Brown - The Lost Symbol, Angels and Demons, The Da Vinci Code

The Kite Runner, and A Thousand Splendid Suns by - not always the happiest, but good books.

His Dark Materials series, by Philip Pullman

Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin. You may know the HBO series Game of Thrones, these are the books it's based on. I wouldn't say this a is quick read. The books are lengthy and it took me long time to finish the 5 books that are currently written.

I'm a fan of Anthony Bourdain so any of his non fiction books. I'd start with his first one, Kitchen Confidential
Wedding Venue - Ramsey Golf & Country Club, NJ Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Photographer - Steve Belner, of Photovisions

  • If you want something light and hilarious, all of the Jen Lancaster memoirs are laugh out loud funny. And even though they're not LOVE stories, the relationship between her and her husband is funny, inspiring, and relatable.

<div>Ditto this.  They're dystopian novels similar to The Hunger Games or the show Revolution (but better, IMO).  I really enjoyed the first two books and I'm looking forward to the third.</div>

  • I actually did read the all three 50 Shades books on my honeymoon and thought they were very entertaining. No, they were not deep and thought consuming, but I thought it was an enjoyable, and humorous, light read. I also love Gillian Flynn books: Gone Girl, Dark Places, and Sharp Objects. They're a little dark and twisted but I enjoyed them.

  • What genre are you looking for?  For YA light reads, try Anna and the French Kiss & Lola and the Boy Next Door.  For more adult romance-ish (some suspense, some action, some humor, a lot of hot alpha male) books, I love anything by Kristen Ashley.

I liked Gone Girl as well.

I may be atypical and keep that in mind when I give you suggestions because I read Ann Rule on my HM--The Stranger Beside Me--which was the true story of Ted Bundy. I'm just fascinated by true crime stories/stories about serial killers. I'm not creepy at all.

For something in a totally different genre, I love love loved Firefly Lane by Kristin hannah. I read it two summers ago. A great book if you have a sister or a very close female friend. Made me laugh hysterically and bawl. I want to re-read it which is rare. I usually only read books once.

My favorite mystery/suspense writer is Kevin O'Brien. I absolutely love every one of his books. That would be perfect beach reading material for me, but it isn't for everyone! I also do like James Patterson. His are very fast reads and not very "deep" but still enjoyable.

  • Thank you! I totally forgot I posted this until I drove past the library today :)

I will not read 50 shades of grey. Just not interested.

I read all the shopaholic books, kite runner/splendid suns, most books by jodi picoult (all of them are the same...not a fan anymore), candace bushnell, etc. I work in an academic setting and all I read are serious academic books. I like to read non-serious stuff over break. So, I guess I like girly books, but I did really enjoy dragon tattoo.

  • I love the Janet Evanovich books, one for the money, etc.  Those are quick, fun, easy reads.  Currently I'm reading "I suck at girls" by J. Halpern I believe.  It's hillarious.  He also wrote "Sh*t my dad says."
  • Another vampire series that is nothing like Twilight is by Guillermo del Toro  - the first book is The Strain. If you like Tudor Novels, Innocent Traitor by Allison Weir is excellent, as is My Lady of Cleves by Margaret Campbell Barnes. I also enjoyed The Nazi Officer's Wife, which is a memoir. The 19th Wife is a good read about polygamy and the history of the LDS church.

I second the recommendation for Divergent, and if teen dystopian lit is your interest, you'd probably also like Matched. Or you could go into traditional sci-fi dystophian lit and bring along The Handmaid's Tale (one of my top five favorite books ever).

For girly books, I do really like books by Sarah Dessen. They're quick YA reads but I really love them - Lock and Key is good, and This Lullaby is one of my favorites by her. Great beach books!

  • I may be slightly confused but did you say reading on your honeymoon?  This is the one moment you have your husband's undivided attention.  I've been married for 16 years and I wish I could have another week of him looking at me with eyes filled with entrige and excitement.  I would not recommend reading.  This doesn't mean you have to spend your time having sex but you should take this time to grow deeper and more intimate with your husband.  Now is when you teach each other everything there is to know about each other mentally, emotionally and physically.  Ok, now that I've said that and being that I am the owner of an online sex shop for women http://www.naomisays.net. I must say if you are going to read on your honeymoon it definately should not be Fifty Shades of Grey.  The book was written for people like myself, who's been married for a long time and need the extra excitement.  Have fun and enjoy each other....my advice is don't take a book.  Create your own.

  • If you read YA books at all, the Pretty Little Liars series by Sara Shepard (also a tv series on ABC Family). They are super easy reads like Twilight but also somewhat suspenseful and interesting. I've borrowed them from my friend and devoured them. I mean, I may be 25 but that doesn't mean I've outgrown the easygoing YA book world ;)

The Sookie Stackhouse (True Blood) series by Charlaine Harris are also great novels and not too serious.

  • I second Phillip Pullman - incredible author, and if you haven't read anything by him you need to.  Draws you in, but easy reads.

I completely agree with the first part of this post. Why would you be reading?  That is why I suggested 50 shades in order to make them drop the book and pay attention the new hubby.  Isn't that the purpose of the honeymoon to spend time with your new spouse?  But hey, I did enjoy the book and I am not yet married and don't really need any more excitement!  If that is not your thing I completely understand, but I know plenty of people who found the actual the story line (not the sex) in these books amazing!

Vomit. 50SOG isn't a "love story". It's glorifying extreme abuse.

And no, I'm not talking about the BDSM aspect-there are plenty of people out there that engage in BDSM in a healthy, consensual manner. Christian Grey is a manipulative douche, and no woman should ever mistake his behavior for "love".
