NYC?

We are going to NYC..we already have some things planned, like going to a Broadway show, but I was wondering if anyone who has been there had any recommendations. We are both foodies and like to be active, if that helps.  We would also like to take advantage of the arts while we are there. Please let me knowif you have any thoughts! Thank you!

Re: NYC?

  • I live here so maybe I can help. I would stay near Central Park-maybe Columbus Circle. Also, Soho is nice too. My rec is to stay clear of Times Square (fine for a visit, but it’s not romantic or good for your home base). A show would be great and I love to see them when I get the chance. You can get great discount in advance tickets online that you don’t need to wait while you’re here and you can plan accordingly. And food…ahhh the food. So much great stuff here. Lupa is great for Italian and totally affordable (make a reservation in advance). If you want a once in a lifetime experience you can do Per Se (one month to the day for a reservation). There are awesome street carts from burritos to a tofu man. Cupcakes galore (I like Sugar Sweet Sunshine and Butterlane). Enjoy your honeymoon. I think that you’ll love NYC!

  • Wow, thanks for the great ideas! We are planning to saty for 7 days, 6 nights, do you think that is a decent amount of time?
  • If you like craft beer, there's a cool bar right near the Empire State Building called Rattle and Hum. Also check out Ginger Man and Blind Tiger (that one's on Bleecker Street which is a cool neighborhood to explore).

Club Macanudo is a cigar bar that FI likes, if your FI (or you!) would enjoy that.

Fette Sau in Brooklyn is great for barbecue. Gray's Papaya is a cool and cheap place for hot dogs (there are lots of locations, we go to the one by the 9th Street PATH train station in Manhattan). Pomme Frites sells those paper cones of french fries with lots of great dipping sauces. Gray's and Pommes Frites are in the Village, which is a great place to walk around. A Salt and Battery is a cute British fish & chips shop down there.

We volunteered as ushers for The Blue Man Group show and we saw the show for free. It's super-easy. Call the box office to arrange for it ... this was several years ago, so double-check to see that they even still offer this promotion.

You might be able to get on line early and wait for standby tickets to David Letterman. Rachael Ray also tapes in New York, IDK if she offers standby tickets. I think Martha Stewart tapes in New York too, and maybe Jon Stewart? Check out their websites for ticket and standby ticket offers.

If you want a nice hotel, I've stayed in the Westin Times Square and it was SO comfortable. IDK the price since it was for a work conference, but since it's your honeymoon maybe you can splurge.

  • I live here too so I thought I'd chime in...

There are a ton of FREE things to do here too....
museums {the met is my fave}, it's gorgeous so make sure you check it out! This is on the East Side.

Time Square is VERY touristy, which is why you will barely see any locals there, but you ARE a tourist, so you should DEF should check it out. When you go see a Broadway show it's right around there, so you can do that together. There's also a huge toys r us there which a lot of people like to go see.

Rockefeller Center is great... if you plan ahead you can actually get tickets to some TV show tapings if that interests you {SNL is filmed here, the Today show}.... there are also some other late night shows filmed in other parts of NYC.

Central Park is gorgeous... there is a free walking tour that is awesome. You can also rent bikes and go on your own, it's very romantic. The zoo cost money and it's not a great zoo, but it's still fun! The better zoo is in the Bronx.

Shopping... Hub and I like to spend the day sometimes just shopping {5th is prob what you hear of the most where Tiffany's, Cartier, Apple, etc is}. It's right by the edge of Central Park so you can do that in one day.

  • Wow thank you! That gives me a lot of ideas...I wanted to do some touristy things, but also wanted to enjoy NYC not just as a tourist....so thanks everyone!!! That helps a lot!
  • I too live in New York and when I'm looking for things to do I use yelp.com or theskint.com for cheap activites/deals. Menupages.com for the best restaurants in your area. There's a lot of cool wine bars with live music, comedy clubs, the ballet or opera, cirque du soliel.. its the city of endless fun :)

  • DH and I mini-mooned in NYC last May and had a blast!  We stayed at the Waldorf and basically ate/drank our way through the city :-)  Loved walking around Central Park and stopping at the Boat House for snacks and taking pics at the Alice in Wonderland statue.  We also went to 30 Rock early one morning to watch a taping of The Today Show, which was a lot of fun.  The Carnegie Deli is worth a stop for lunch...  we also toured the Met and wandered through the Village and TriBeCa.  Have fun!
