My fiance has a bad opinion of Mexico...and even though Riviera Maya is 40+ miles from Cancun he thinks it will be like Cancun...touristy and a bit trashy.  Any advice on convincing him otherwise?  I told him some of the beaches are award winning but can't find any links to support that.

Yes, there are parts of the Riviera Maya that are touristy, but not as much as Cancun.  The resorts are generally spread out and more private, and the beaches are beautiful.  Try googling "secluded resorts in the Riviera Maya" and you can find some areas that are less touristy.  We are going to Playa Del Carmen, which is still a bit touristy, but about 1000 times less so than Cancun.

Riviera Maya is NOTHING like Cancun.  Cancun has a lot of high rise hotels.  RM has secluded resorts that are max maybe 3 or 4 stories tall.  Playa del Carmen is a cute little town.  Show your fiance some of the Secrets Resorts pictures and he'll change his mind

We loved the Riviera Maya area was not anything like cancun...we are going back!!!!

We are going to Playa del Carmen for our honeymoon too. The resorts there look amazing! We are thinking of Grand Vela, Royal Hideaway, or Secrets Maroma. It looks like they are all a day trip away from the Mayan ruins, I'm guessing. Has anyone been to any of these resorts?

Thanks for the words of advice ladies!  We just booked our trip yesterday and will be staying in a preferred club swim out room at Secrets Maroma!  We can't wait!  Once I showed my fiance all the pretty beaches and interesting excursions he was sold!  Plus Secrets Maroma has tons of great reviews!
