Alterations

Hi ladies! I need to make an appointment to get my dress altered (hemmed, bustle, don't think it needs to be taken in but we'll see!) and I need some suggestions on places with reasonable prices. My girlfriend got married last month and we both bought our dresses at Alfred Angelo, but her alterations were outrageously expensive. Suggestions on where to go (and where NOT to go!) are greatly appreciated!

I bought my dress at Alfred Angelo for pretty cheap so I went there to have it altered. I figured if they ruined it they would get me a new dress and i figured if  an independant seamstress ruined it I would get a sorry at most. I paid 300 for it to be bustled, taken in an inch on each side, and for black lace to be added at the top and on the hip. They break it down by time and the most expensive part was taking it in (You can't complain about it when your size 2 dress is too big). The lady did a nice job and it was done on time (3 weeks).

Ok, well that doesn't sound too bad! Mine was more than I anticipated spending, but I loved it so oh well. Lol. Do they give you an estimate before actually altering it? You have a point about any damage to the dress. I think I want a french bustle and I feel like that might cost more than a regular one! Mine is a size 0 and when I tried it on in May it was a little big, but I think I've put on some weight since then! I'll call them to see when they have someone available and try to get an estimate! Thanks for your help ladies!

Jeannine is #1 on these boards. I've heard nothing but good things from prices to timeliness to personality. Give her a call because from what I've heard, she is 1/2 to 1/3 the price of bridal shops and does great work.
  • I got my wedding dress alterations done by Sonia Rosas, she has worked at a couple of the bridal shops in the area over the years. I don't remember what all she had to do to my dress but the prices were very reasonable, much less than I was quoted at the store I bought the dress in.
