Colorado!

My grandparents gave Fi and I their timeshare in Avon, Colorado for November! Both excited, and yet a little nervous because we are aware there is a HIGH chance that skiing will not be open yet, and thats fine with us but is anyone familiar with other things to do if its too cold to hike/bike ride/horseback ride, but not enough snow to ski or snowmobile?! Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I went to Summit County last summer and we spent at afternoon in Avon. If you're going for a number of days, I would recommend renting a car and driving to Frisco, Dillon, Breckinridge, etc.  They were all cute towns.

I have a write up of our trip in my blog if you're interested.

  • Lucky you! What a beautiful area (I'm a little biased - I grew up nearby), and you'll get to enjoy it with almost no crowds. It's true that Vail and Beaver Creek might not be open yet, but Copper Mountain almost surely will be (Vail & BC are a little lower in elevation, and Copper puts extra effort to open early for race training for the US Team and others), and Copper is just a short drive over Vail Pass. Also, if you're hardy and bring good gear, you'll be able to hike and horseback ride even if it's cold outside!

For other activities... I'd recommend taking a gondola up to one of the mountaintop restaurants - I assume Vail has one (but I don't know the name), but if it's not open yet, you can drive over to Keystone (~30min from Avon) and eat at the Alpenglow Stube or the Fondue Chessel on the top of the mountain. Both are super fun - the Stube for a fine dining experience, and the Chessel for (of course) amazing fondue and a slightly more rowdy atmosphere with a polka band... Also, I think there are horse-drawn sleigh rides to dinner cabins in Vail or in Summit County, though I don't now if they operate early in the season.

Assuming again that you have a car, you can drive west on I-70 from Avon through Glenwood Canyon to Glenwood Springs. The Canyon itself is a beautiful drive - the road has won awards for the engineers' ability to minimally affect the gorgeous natural features when installing a major interstate. Glenwood Springs has a really fun hotsprings and thermal caves, and both will be delightfully un-crowded that time of year! This makes for a perfect day trip.

If all else fails, the shopping in Vail is great! :)

    Have a wonderful honeymoon!
