Not sure what to do...

We are getting married August 31, 2013. We have pretty much everything figured out, we just need to get the cake squared away and sort out the menu for the reception and plan the honeymoon.

FI works at a steel mill and they have shut down for a week over the summer. The rule is that if you don't work shut down doing maintenance then you have to use your vacation time. He planned on working shut down and then taking the week off after wedding so that we can get away. Well the vacation schedules came and shut down week is the week of his best friends wedding August 3rd - August 10th.

This means FI can't work shut down week because it's his best friends bacheler party on August 3rd and then the wedding on August 10th. I understand that FI can't do anything about when shut down week was scheduled. And that he has to be in his best friends WP.

But because FI only has a week of vacation we can't go on a honeymoon. Our wedding day is Saturday of Labor day weekend (same weekend we got engaged in 2011) so it's a three day weekend. But we aren't sure what to do...do we go away on Sunday? Do we hold off and just go on our 1 year anniversary?

Any ideas would be very much appreciated!

  • Is the best friend's wedding out of town? If it's in town, then maybe he can work around the wedding festivities. You can also justg go to a fancy hotel nearby for two nights (Sunay/Monday) and then save the longer trip for next year. However, only you guys can decide what works best with your schedule.

<div>The wedding is local. I thought that FI could work around the wedding schedule too and it's either you work or you're on vacation. There's no in between. Because they need a guarantee that you will be working shut down and they move everyone around so much for maintenance and things that if you can only work a few days it's a nightmare. This happened two summers ago that they told him he could have shut down off (he didn't have vacation time yet) and a week before they scheduled him to work and he couldn't not work. </div><div>
</div><div>I think maybe we'll try to get away Sunday night. We figured it out he'll be on nightshift when he goes back so he'll have to go in Monday night. </div>

I worked in HR for a manufacturing company for a long time so I kind of get where you are coming from. However what I don't understand is how come he has to take the week off (Monday through Friday) when both of the days his best friend is having wedding activities are on Saturday. Unless he works weekends or shut down week starts on a Sunday/Saturday.

Is there a reason your fiance can't go to work that week and still go to the Bachelor Party.I think it would be silly of him to take a week off for someone else's wedding when it doesn't seem necessary. But all I have is the information you are providing me.

just go away another week. have him see what's available.
or he can skip the bachelor party. that's not a necessary part of being in a WP and, since your HM hangs in the balance, he should consider switching things around.

Ditto this.. your HM definitely trumps someone else's bachelor party. If whether or not you guys get to take a HM hangs in the balance of someone else's b-party then your FI should make the decision that he'd rather have a HM with his new wife then go out one night for someone else. Either way he's missing out on something important, but your HM definitely trumps someone else's party and his friend should more than understand that.
  • If it were me, I'd just wait to go on your anniversary.  It's better to wait a year and get the full week and do it right than to half-ass it because you don't have enough time.  Plus, you can save extra money and treat yourself to something extra special, maybe?
  • I also don't see why he needs to take off that week or even a day.  He should work, skip the b party if necessary, go to his friend's wedding and you guys go on your hm.
  • I too am confused about his priorities & the schedule.

Your wedding & HM shoudl be a priority over somebody else's celebration.

If the bachelor party is sat night, can't FI work Sat day, go to the party, not drink too much & work Sunday if that's required?

    Same with the BFF's wedding?

I'm not understanding why those aren't options.  I realize that he won't be able to cut loose but . . .which is more important to him?

If you have to do your big trip on your one year anniversary fine but you should at least stay somewhere that Sunday.
