Resorts in Switzerland

Hi everyone! I just got engaged last Thursday to my boyfriend of 5 years, and we are starting to plan our wedding for May 2011 :)

We've always talked about a honeymoon in Switzerland, but since I've started researching resorts there, I've noticed a disturbing trend - all of them seem to close mid-end of March, and re-open mid-end of June!!

Does anyone know of any resorts or similar places to stay in Switzerland that are open in May?

Thanks very much!! Laughing

  • Ski resorts are going to tend to close because the big draw is skiing, which is obviously not available in May. You can try looking on tripadvisor.com. Without knowing your budget, I can't really help, Switzerland is really expensive. (And since it is not on the Euro, the strengthening dollar doesn't help either.) Try looking on Rick Steve's guide. He's never steered me wrong: http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/

I prefer Austria to Switzerland, it's cheaper and the Alps are just as beautiful. Side trips to Vienna, Salzburg, or even Budapest are amazing. It's been a few years, but this was one of my favorite resorts in Austria: http://alpendomizil.at/28.0.html?&L=1 I've never been in summer though. But they have an amazing spa.
  • I went to Switzerland last May and it was absolutely beautiful!  I'm dying to go back.  It's true that the ski resorts close, but there are still plenty of hotels open at that time.  There's also a lot to do!  There will still be snow on the mountains so you can take train rides up to see that.  However, at the lower elevations there shouldn't be snow so you can hiking and things like that if you're interested.  I recommend Grindelwald, Interlaken, and Gstaad in the Bernese Oberland and Zermatt.

But, yes, it is very expensive.  The hotels aren't bad at all, but just eating simple meals costs a ridiculous amount compared to other places.  Still worth it, IMO.

Let me know if you're still thinking about it and have any other questions!

You don't have to stay at a resort in Switzerland to have a good time.  We went there a few years ago and stayed at a B&B recommended by Rick Steves (it was a backpacking trip so we were on a budget), but it was so nice.  We stayed in Interlaken and took little side trips to Lauterbrunnen, Murren, etc. and absolutely loved it!  The scenery was gorgeous.  We splurged on a trip up to the Jungfraujoch observatory in the Alps which was well worth it (definitely one of the highlights for us).  There are some pictures toward the end of my planning bio if you want to see what it looked like.  But Switzerland is quite a bit more expensive which is the only downfall.  We actually considered going back there this fall, but the price is what made us change our minds.  Northern Italy, southern Germany (Bavaria), and Austria are all good alternatives so those are the places we're considering instead.
