How does this alteration look?

A real bride from another site was kind enough to email me her dress photos since we are dress twins.  Maybe it's bad of me to post someone else's photos, but I'd like your opinions (I cropped them down as much as I could to show just the dress).

She had the satin underdress trimmed to an A-line (dragged on the floor a little) and left the train.

What do you think of the lace train with no satin behind it?  When the lace is bustled it doesn't even look like an 'alien poofy butt' (I am not fond of bustles).  It's almost invisible!

The seamstress I saw last night did not like it at all.  I think I find a new one!

(would not plan to let train out for wedding)

I don't know, still trying to decide what to do!

Or I could do bridals with the dress intact, then get it all one length for the wedding day since I won't have any need for the train any longer.

Re: How does this alteration look?

  • I am kind of indifferent about it.  I think it looks fine but it is not something that I would wear.  If you like the style then you should go for it.  If you are worried if people will think that it looks messy, I certainly don't think it does.  It shows the lace detail very well and has a vintage feel.

I like the original better I would just leave it as is!

  • I like it both ways.. but i think it's really up to you, your the one wearing it.

  • I'm wishing this dress was local so I could try it on!  It's from 2008 though and only online used.
  • I think you realllllly need to stop looking at dresses Gina =)

  • It looks cute on the side- but I'm not sure if I like being able to see the floor through the train. You'll be outside, right? I wonder if hay, grass, twigs may get caught in the train?

I like the original, but I like this one too. Which one do you like the best?

  • This other dress was already in my folder stash for silhouette reference.  I use them to figure out what to do with my alterations.  I haven't looked online for MORE dresses at least!
  • I like the original best, but that's just me.  How are they bustling?  With a "drawstring" or with buttons?  I'm guessing the lace is buttons, but not sure about the satin (without alterations).  I think it leaves a less poufy "cinderella's evil stepsisters" butt if it's buttoned instead of drawstringed (is that even a word?).

Anyway, it's your dress, and if you like it with just the lace train, then that's what you should go for.  The dress is beautiful either way though, so I don't think you should be looking at other dresses!

  • Dresses look way different on then online.  I would never in a million years order a dress without trying it on my own body.

Oh yes, I vowed not to do that since I previously bought 2 that did not work out (still have one left to sell).  I wouldn't buy another online after that.

I wanted no train at all.  Period.  But I'm alone on that whole topic!  Makes me second guess the decision, KWIM?

EDIT to ADD: if you wondered why I got a dress with a train at all, it's because the actual number of non-temple dresses without ugly Mormon sleeves that I could try on physically is very slim in Utah.
  • Iw ould leave it as it. It looks very pretty in its original design.

I like pic of the original. I like the side pic of the lace only train but i'm not too fond of pic#1. Have you seen the dress bustled? I think you should get rid of the train. It clear in your post you hate bustles.
  • I really like the way your dress is and I think I like the lace only.  But as a pp said I would be worried that the lace got destroyed in the unmowed meadow you are getting married in.  If you want no train I think you should chop it off.

I agree with the seamstress. I do not like it at all. Sorry! Just my honest opinion. Although I suppose if you didn't ever let out the train, you wouldn't ever see it like that, so you wouldn't know there was lace without satin. I just don't like the way it looks with just lace dragging alone.

  • Guess we're in the minority gina cuz I LOVE IT!! I really do, I think the lace train makes it look delicate. I say go for it! It looks great bustled as well, you can hardly see it and I know that's what you've been worried about too.

And as some PPs have said, it's your dress. You'll be spending all day in it so YOU have to love it regardless what your seamstress and anyone else says. I think a lace train is a great compromise, but if you're still worried about having a train at all, then chop it off.. no big. You may be alone in wanting no train but the reality is, you alone will be wearing that dress. So start thinking about what you really want, make a decision and do it. Don't bother checking with others. Whatever you decide to do will still result in you wearing a beautiful white wedding dress on your big day! GL! :)

My thoughts exactly!!  I think taking the satin out makes it a little more unique.  I love the look of it...but it is your dress and you're the one wearing it!
  • I think it's beautiful, unique, and stylish! Plus, it really shows off all that amazing lace! I say go for it! I actually prefer it to the original. And like the other ladies said, remember, it's your special day!

  • i have been thinking the same thing actually. And i agree i love it with jsut the lace on the train (and the joy of a smaller bustle) but anyone i've told it too looks at me like i'm crazy. seeing in that ladies pics makes me like it even more! hehe I didnt want a train either but when i found my dress it's my fav part and i feel like taking out the lining on iy shows it of even better :)

Thanks for all the input!  I do sit on big decisions for a loooong time, so I don't have a final answer yet, but that was sweet of you to ask!

At the moment, I think the plan is to have a 5 point over bustle put in sometime this spring (will cost about $25) and see how that looks/feels.  Then go from there!  If I don't like it, then I'm only out $25 and will go for the 'chop!'

Every time FI leaves the house, I put my dress on!  LOL
  • Ok let us know what you've decided! I totally wish I could put on my dress anytime like you! I'm probably going to leave it at my parents' until the wedding. Must be exciting!
