Please help us decide destination!

Hey ladies,

We're at the point where we need to be booking our honeymoon and are having a hard time deciding.

We want to go to Hawaii because we want to rest for a few days and then be able to hop in our rental car and sightsee like shameless tourists.

We're looking at beautiful hotels in Hawaii (our budget is about $7,000) but they're just fancy hotels similar to what we've stayed at in Vegas and Arizona.  But we figure that this will be our only opportunity to spend two weeks on vacation for a LONG time between work and kids.  The long airfare makes it difficult to do in less than a week.  And we want to go to Diamond Head and Pearl Harbor.

The hotels in Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Maya are fancy AND include beach-front views with hammocks and chaise lounge chairs.  That feels very luxurious - like what we'd think of for our honeymoon.  But we're worried that we'll miss the ability to sightsee in these areas.

So the question.....nothing special hotel but sightseeing that we're looking forward to?  Or amazing hotel and all-inclusive but not as excited about the sightseeing?

We've talked this to death and just need some outside insight.

Sorry so long! Thanks!

  • I'd rather do stuff than sit around in a fancy pants chair, but that's just me. At the end of the day, what do you want to have memories of?

With two weeks, you could easily do two Hawaiian islands. If you're going to visit Oahu, I'd really recommend contrasting it with the Big Island (hello active volcanoes!) or Kauai.
  • Have you thought about going outside the country?  Perhaps someplace like Greece, where you get fancy pants hotels or even just gorgeous views no matter where you are, and you can sightsee like mad.

Ideas:  Take a villa for 2 weeks on the coast in Italy or in Greece, S. France... Spain...  The possibilities are endless! Think outside the box! :)
  • I know no one who has loved going to Mexico.  It's interesting, but not overwhelmingly romantic/safe which is what most people want on a HM.
  • I would definitely vote for the sightseeing you're most looking forward to (Hawaii) in a nice but non-remarkable hotel.  As PP said, you will have plenty of time with a two-week trip to see the things you want and still rest up for a couple days before heading out of the resort.

  • There are also some luxury cruise lines that might be good to look into.  You would see different places, and always have a beautiful view (with great food and unlimited drinks).

Um, I have to completely disagree with this but, then again, I'm guessing you and I disagree on most things based on the other posts of yours I've had the pleasure of reading.

  • Personally I would vote for Hawaii.  Mexico to me is beautiful but a place you can go anytime.  We stayed 8 days in Hawaii and spent half our time lounging and half our time sightseeing and we thought it was perfect.
  • We are going to the Sandals Royal Carribean in Jamaica. We had a hard time deciding too, but I think it is going to be faboulous. We debated, Negril, Ocho Rios and a few others. I have also heard from friends that Aruba is nice as well as Barbados. The only prob with Barbados (at least this is what our TA told us) is that it takes 1 entire day each way for air travel. If you aren't pressed for time, it shouldn't be a prob for you guys. I wanted to stay longer than 5 days, but due to our jobs, and time off we are taking for the wedding we can't, but I know it will still be great! Good Luck!
  • Personally my fiance and I love going to Mexico and we are going back for our honeymoon (Cozumel).

It sounds like you guys really want to go to Hawaii and it sounds like you have enough time to book a few days here and there. Stay at a fancy-pants hotel the first few days to unwind then move on to something less fancy, or a B&B (my parents just stayed in one and loved it!). Rent a car and drive around. Island hop, if you want to, to see everything.

Either way you're going to have a great time!

  • I've loved Mexico every time I've been there! If you're going to be on the Yucatan then I would highly recommend going to Chichen Itza! It's such a cool place. And I really think there is plenty of sight seeing to do in Mexico. Smile
  • I'd have to agree that I love Mexico. And it is completely ignorant to think that Mexico is any less safe than most of the caribbean islands.
  • do a cruise around hawaii.. there you get luxury stay, rest and touring
  • If you will be staying there for two weeks you will have plenty of time to sight-see and rest. The islands are relatively close together, and you can take a fairy from one to another.
