July 2012 Weddings

Tell me about your guestbook

Please! I've been browsing them lately and don't know what I want. I like the thumbprint idea where the prints are the leaves on a tree, but I can see that getting messy and guests being irritated that they had to stick their finger in ink. And I don't think I want to go the traditional guestbook route, so I need ideas! Sorry if there was a post about this not too long ago, I can't remember.

Re: Tell me about your guestbook

  • I'm doing a thumbprint tree. I got ours on etsy and it came last week. I love it. It could be messy but we're going to have wet-naps so the guests can clean their fingers after they do it. I just liked the idea of having something that we will actually look at. I had a regular guestbook for my Bat Mitzvah and I don't think I've ever read it.

  • Good timing, I'm ordering ours today!

It's a ceramic serving platter that everyone will sign and then we take it home and bake it to seal in the signatures.  Something like this (link):

  • We're going to do something like this, I think: http://pinterest.com/pin/112801165636289245/ . . . Not totally sure, though. I also don't really like the idea of a traditional guest book. I also saw someone who got a calendar with their e-photos and then asked everyone to sign on their birth date. I thought that was kind of cute and it was something you could put up in your house for a year, then save.

Personally, I don't like the thumbprint trees because 1) it's kind of a trendy thing right now that everyone is doing, and 2) people's fingers will be all inky.

  • Our photobooth comes with a scrapbook - each photobooth strip prints out two copies, and the guests can put one copy into the scrapbook and write a little message next to it.

  • k8888 that's a neat idea, I've never seen that before! I pinned something on Pinterest the other day that is essentially the guests writing words of wisdom or something like that, but I don't know how I would want to display them or what to do with them afterward.

  • Love that idea, k8888! May steal it.

  • We're doing a guestbook from shutterfly with our e-pictures with space for people to write in. I LOVE it!!

  • I *want* to do what Esskem is doing, but our photog package came with a guestbook of up to 20 e-pics with each picture on the left and a facing page for signatures, so we'll probably just do that since we get it anyway.

We ended up going with a 11x16 photo frame for our guests to sign that way we can put one of our wedding pictures or even keep our e-pic in it and hang it up when we get a house.

  • We're doing a mixbook and putting a bunch of different questions in it best marriage advice, date night ideas, predictions on first kids, favorite memory with bride and groom, etc and have a line under each question for the guest to sign their name after they've answered the question

  • the movie UP is big part of FI and my story- first date, valentines day gifts, and the proposal. For one valentines day; FI started an "adventure book" which i have somewhat filled in. I hope to update it before the wedding, and kind of do what mekiakoo is doing, putting some engagement pictures in, and other pages will ask for advice or date ideas or other silly things for guests to write.
Its a good way for guests to learn our story too...so depending on how much work you want to put in...
We are having a whole table dedicated to UP stuff we've collected; so the book will be displayed there.

  • I was going for the thumbprint tree idea as well and since I was worried about the same things as you ceglare, I had decided to use a leaf stamp. In fact if you're still interested in that, there are several Etsy sellers that provide leaf stamps along with the blank tree poster/ canvas. I found that to be a nice happy middle. But I'm going with a different guestbook. The site is guestbookstore.com and this is one of my favorites so far. Each guest gets a page to fill out and it has things like what was your favorite part of the day? advice for the couple, how did you meet the couple, predictions for the future etc. There's even parts where they can doodle with markers, personally looks like people can have lots of fun with it. Per FI's request we'll be ordering the pages with spaces where you can put the person's picture on their page. I'm actually really excited about it haha. And cuz I can get pages in Spanish too! : I also saw an interesting guestbook recently by a knottie on the DIY board...can't remember her name right now, I'll have to go home and check. But she made a guestbook where each person wrote like well wishes/ advice on a card or folded paper and then tucked it into one of the many little pockets that were made and glued onto the guestbook's pages. Not sure if that's making sense but it was cute. I'll PIP later.

Oops, so sorry! That had paragraphs. But I guess TK mobile couldn't care less haha
  • We're having a photobooth.  I bought a bunch of scrapbooking paper & sharpies.  We'll have the stack of scrapbook paper on the table, a few sheets spread out...FI & I will take a picture in the photobooth while everyone is at cocktail hour to start the pages so people get the jist of what to do...

After they take their picture they keep 1 copy and the other goes onto the scrapbook paper where they can write us a little note should they choose!
  • I am decorating a mailbox and cutting a slit in the top for quests to drop postcards in. I designed postcard on VP and it has a poem on the front that reads:

These cards are for our wedding book.
A modern twist on the standard look.
From each of your experiences, comes a
very treasured gift. A priceless piece of
knowledge that we did not know exists.
Please share with us your wisdom about
marriage, love, and life. How to be a devoted,
loving husband, or a top notch, first rate wife.
Please write your thoughts and gestures to
share with us for life. For the greatest gift of
all, is the gift of your advice.

Then on the back they write their advice or well wishes and their name and put it in our mailbox. It also will serve as a card box.
  • We are also doing a non-traditional guest book.  I am having my guests sign polished river rocks and we will display them in a tall vase or a shallow glass bowl in our home.  Something kind of like this...

  • Our plan right now I THINK is to have a "traditional" guestbook that two of my cousins will look after in the church, and then something crafty at one of our fun display tables at the reception.

I found this seller on Etsy and she has really cute traditional guestbooks: http://modernshabby.com/Home_Page.html

I love the letter to sign that bridetobe posted, and I have also considered one of the big photo frames or something else that you can hang in your home to remind you of your wedding day.

I also don't really like the thumbprint trees....even if there are wet wipes around, it kind of seems like a kindergarten project to me.
  • We are doing throw photobooth scrapbook thing too. I love it!

I'm trying to think of something creative and different. Since we are a beach wedding, I was thinking it would be cute to have each guest write  a short note or wish for us on a piece of paper and roll it and tie it and drop it in a huge "glass bottle" so it turns out like a bunch of messages in a bottle. We are also having a photo booth and like the idea of getting an extra copy of the pics places in a scrapbook with messages.

  • I saw a cute idea where you buy squares of fabric in your wedding colors (or not) and have the guests each take a square and write in permanent marker a little message......then you can make a quilt out of it...or have "someone" make a quilt lol. I'm not really a quilt type of person but I thought it was such a unique idea and could be passed down to future kids!
  • We're having a tree too,that's total new
for our family and for a wedding they've
gone, but it will be in the middle of our dessert/candy
table and then there's 3 hours before dinner,I
mean, they'll do it.Of course wet hankies and soft
hankies will be provided.Every other guest book
I've seen was always ignored, and someone had to
take it from all guest tables so they could sign it,I just
don't feel like getting into that trouble. Then you can have a
wishing tree with little cards or stone pebbles to write on or
a tree with leaves where they just write their names or a puzzle.
There are many ideas on etsy.

  • I'm doing a polaroid guest book (but with Fuji Instamax since polaroid is discontinued). Everyone takes a polaroid and puts it in a scrabook and writes you a message/draws a doodle/whatever! I thought it would be fun and different and hopefully people will be more creative with it (especially people who take pictures later in the night!!)
  • Our guest book is actually baseball bats. We are having a baseball themed wedding because we are hardcore giants fans but our colors are based off the baseball and not a team. I felt like it would be too birthday party-ish.
